Can't zero my scope in savage TR

Got a fairly new savage mkII tr. It has been fired with a buddies scope and ring combo using my factory bases. Did not like the bases and through them out while back. Rifle has sat for 3-5 months now.

Fast forward till today. Got a egw base from a buddy he had not used, and a pair of burris xtr lows I had from another gun I took apart. Put the combo together with a scope from another rifle and can not get the windage to zero on the bore sighter. I completely bottom out and still not close to center on the grid.

Scope tracks fine and for giggles I swapped the scope/ring combo to my 700 and it bore sights fine and falls right in the middle of its adjustment range.

That being said does anyone agree that my base is not straight? I even removed it and re-mounted it for some reason.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Can't zero my scope in savage TR

I'm not sure what boresighter you are using but would suggest taking a look down the barrel and through the scope and see if it is truly an issue. This is the only method I ever use and it usually does quite well. If it duplicates what the boresighter is showing then you probably have a base problem.

Also, if it helps I do have my original bases here if you need them for troubleshooting let me know. I put the EGW 20moa on and had no issues.

Cross bolt at 60 in lbs. Same as when I put it on my 700 with egw base. Looking down the center of the rife trying to line up the center of the base with bore sighter something is off. It seems it runs off to the right. Same problem I am having with the scope on. The reticle will not come to the right enough.

Guess I will contact egw tuesday. Thanks.

Re: Can't zero my scope in savage TR

Switched my base to my buddies 93r17 using my scope/ring combo and every thing is fine.

Seems I have a mis-drilled receiver.

Now will savage fix this?
If they indeed fix it will they let me send just the receiver back? I have painted the stock and had the barrel threaded.

Re: Can't zero my scope in savage TR

savage had a mis drilled receiver years ago, went through a similiar situation as you, but it was hole spacing, not a crooked line. since your base fit your buddy's, i guess it is your receiver.

you can call savage if you want, however i hope they don't give you the "well, use the factory bases" speech.

EGW actually made (makes) a special base for the misdrilled ones from back in the day, and also a blank (no holes). only problem with the blank is you have to take it to the smith to get 'em drilled. i don't know if that'll solve it, but i would definately ask savage to do something about it if they are drilled crooked off the centerline. even with millet windage adjustable rings, you'll still be putting some sort of twist on the scope, it's nearly impossible to get it right with the off center holes.

good luck, there should be some warranty left on theat rifle.

SOME SAVAGE WARRANTY INFO
http://www.savagearms.com/customerservice/warranty/

hopefully you are the original owner, and have a receipt (proof of purchase) and registered the warranty.

of course keep calling the number, get a name before you state the problem. don't even say you have a problem. http://www.savagearms.com/customerservice/contact/
if not satisfied "peggy" on the other end should have a manager, ask for him or her. if that's not possible, call back again and make sure you are not talking to the same person, then ask directly for a manager.

then explain that a factory defect has basically left your firearm useless - you'ld like to see what the savage accuraccy deal is all about, however the defect in workmanship will not allow you to do so.

then ask for an email so that you can sen them all the links to the forums, chat rooms, blogs, etc. that you have created describing the savage customer service you have gotten and the problem.

worse case, you can get the receiver filled and redrilled at a decent gunsmith, along with whatever base you choose to use. yeah it sucks to go through that, but its better than a useless stick, especially after the threading job and paint.

or option 3

have the smith mill down one side of the base the same distance the holes are off from the centerline of the receiver.

Re: Can't zero my scope in savage TR

That is really weird. My dad just sent his Savage (albeit a Savage 10 FCP 308) to savage after owning it for over a year.

No questions asked, sent it in to have a look at it. Free of charge, they replaced the barrel. (it was drilled off-center)

I would call back and tell them that you have had a horrible experience with them. THat may change their tune. Plus, tell them you will tell all your friends about their poor customer service. We are your friends, hopefully they get the idea.
