Capabilities of my model 700 ADL .243

I've got a completely stock 243 with a Redfield scope, and I'm switching it over from my hunting gun to my first target rifle. I would someday like to compete in F-class competitions. But what would be the range I could shoot with this gun effectively? I plan on building it as I progress and become more experienced. Im going to get a better stock, a box mag system, and a better scope later on. But would this consistent enough to shoot at least 400 yds with?

Sure... you can start with that gun...it will go to 400+..it would be good if it were at least a 1"MOA gun....even so you can get started with abit more than that.the main thing is you`re shooting and learning.there is alot to learn about shooting LR...besides having an exspensive gun.
Shoot a couple of local matches and decide what you wanna do..

Thanks for the reply, I shoot rimfire regularly but I have never shot much over 100yds. My plan is to see if I'm cut out for LR shooting, my grandfathers neighbor has a private shooting range that is currently from 100-500 yds I'm gonna try my luck there. But I'm going to have to upgrade my scope soon because my 3-9x40 isn't going to do it at those ranges.

Tactical Hunter,

That rifle as is with the standard 1-10" twist is a 1k rifle. Find a load for 100 gr. spitzer/BT bullets.

There are some years, most recently in fact, that Remington has twisted their .243's in 1-9" or 1-9.25" (both were used). If you have that tighter twist you can push Berger 95 gr. VLD's out to and past 1k.

When you get ready to change the barrel out, look for a 1-7.75" or a 1-8" twist 6mm and you can stabilize up to 115's. At those weights a lot of people go back and forth about liking the extra velocity of the 105/107/108's vs. the 115's. I've tried both and in my rifle, prefer the 105's. You might also look into a more efficient case. But, if not wanting to change cartridge, the .243 is an outstanding performer.

This one is about 8 years old, and I do not know the twist rate. But what would be a good suggestion for factory loads for now? I don't have the stuff to reload yet, but I'm gonna get it in the near future.

1:10 most likely, I have an ADL from around 2004 that shoots 100gr SMK's in the 3-4' (yes foot) area but will drill holes with 85gr bullets... You really won't know until you try I suppose. The math says it should work but its a crapshoot sometimes.

The best factory stuff I've used was Hornady Lite-Mag. That is now called 'Superformance' and it's 95 gr. SST or 100 gr. Spire point boat tail. Both will get you to 1k. In my experience with my 1-10" twisted barrels, Federal Blue box is very good as well. It was made for them by Sierra and has a boattail. I think Speer makes the bullet for that cartridge. I have taken both the 95 gr. SST and the 100 gr. Interlock, SPBT to 1k. They get there, but not nearly as well as intended bullets for that task. Not to mention a $.075 to over $1 is a lot to spend on bullets that don't perform at what you need. Hurry up and get reloading so you can see the value of the .243 Win.
