Carbon buildup on muzzle brake threads

I'm moving a brake to another upper and I can't thread in my muzzle brake all the way because there's a ton of carbon build up on the threads.

I went at it with Hoppes 9 and a brass brush for like, 1.5 hours and it still won't thread on.

Any recommendations for getting this junk off?

Boretech eliminator / carbon remover. I have cleaned my suppressor threads with steel brush, it has not removed the bluing / whatever it is conditioned with.

Let it sit with eliminator for few hours and then brush it, repeat. You can also screw it in and out few times with eliminator applied, the tightening process seems to crack the softened carbon away.

Getting the carbon out of there with plain force or physical means is hard, it is probably very well baked in. Do you also have Loctite remains in there? I am not sure what will get them out the best.

...stand it up threads down or submerge whole brake and let it soak....

nope

I don't really do this sort of carbon cleaning very often, so I sorta want to avoid buying a bunch of new stuff, now that I think about it.

Does an ultrasonic cleaner with Simple Green or something work?

You have an ultrasonic cleaner and you have not tried it yet? I believe it is well worth trying, I believe it should work wonders.

Yeah, I don't really use it much and honestly, I'm not sure if it'll damage my brake, or whatever. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to using it. I ran some brass through it once, and maybe I didn't clean the Simple Green off the brass enough, but the brass ended up looking weirdly corroded like a week later.

CLR will attack carbon extremely well, but it does mess up nitride finishes if you leave it very long at all.

I recently tried a suggestion from Chad at LRI, boiling a muzzle brake in anti-freeze/coolant. Cheap pot from goodwill and a hot plate or camp stove, do it outdoors. Did a phenomenal job of softening up caked on carbon. Didn't destroy the finish like CLR does.

Drill/Wire wheel.

I use a prescription pill bottle, put the brake in it and fill with boretech C4. Screw the cap on and let it sit for 24-48 hours. Hit the threads with an old toothbrush or wire brush as needed and it’s good to go…

maybe i'll try that next time. i got it off just now.

i threw it in the ultrasonic with simple green for like, i dunno, 1.5 hours for no results. i went at the threads with a brush, but it was simply coming off too slowly.

i ended up just cranking it onto my barrel, and that broke up all the carbon caked onto the threads pretty quick. wiped the barrel threads and brake threads off, and now it's gtg

thanks for the recs guys though, i'll check em out in the future maybe, if this method isn't sustainable

Try using carb out. Got it at midway.

By coincidence I just had the same issue. Friend gave his MR308 for loan and I noticed the break was barely keeping on to his suppressor mount.

Both the outer and inner threads had 2 days eliminator applied to them.
Then brushed both with steel brush, outer threads were easy and inner needed more attention. Both were visibly clean, particularly the outer threads, but after 2 more nights with eliminator, still came out blue.
By now the inner threads seemed visibly clean.
I then proceeded to use water and cleaning agent with toothbrush, the outer threads were already clean at this point but the inner threads, first round came out black and second round quite clean.

I decided that whatever carbon that remains in there must not be so bad and proceeded to loctite it back in place.

-the threads required lots of physical work
-the project would have required soaking in eliminator instead of just applying drops onto threads.
-water and soap with a brush worked remarkably well. It also leaves a non-oily surface behind it.

Brake cleaner works very well. I just used it on my suppressor that is cerakoted and it worked so much better than anything else I've used. That's what my Smith buddy told me to use and he was right, as usual.

I put it in a zip lock bag with Boretech carbon remover and drop it in the ultra sonic cleaning unit which is full of water
