Cast and copper coated

Doing some testing on some 200 grain lead cast round nose bullets. I made my own copper plater and copper plated them im also running a gas check but eventually may not depending on how testing goes. Shooting in 30-06, i should have some data in the next few days if anyone is interested.

i’d be curious about your copper plating process. i’ve done a bunch of casting, but never monkeyed with trying to copper plate anything.

The only copper plated i have shot is the Berrys pistol bullets and the Federal fushion rifle rounds wich I believed are an electo plating process.
Both shot very well.

I use a coffee pot hot plate to heat and circulate the water and pharmaceutical grade copper sulfate. In a tupperware container i mix the copper sulfate and distilled water. I use a 1.5 volt phone charger, 1 end goes to a copper anode that hangs in the bath, the other goes to a copper wire i strung thru holes i drilled in the top creating 2 rails to hang bullets on. I tie a single strand of copper wire to each bullet and hang them on the cross wires so the bullets are suspended not touching the bottom. Then i turn it all on for 15 to 20 mins.

I also didnt polish these bullets much, where i swaged them though they look shiny like a new penny

What alloy (or pure Cu) are you using for the anode?

I was using copper pipe that i cut and polished, but i think i need to order something more pure for better results.

seems like a lot of messing around. not that i am opposed to it…sometimes i’ll do things just to learn about it even though i have zero intention of ever really trying to put that knowlege to use.

with bullets, i’ve just increased the weight to compensate for the loss of velocity. and that works great, up to a point regarding velocity/bore size.

That's very cool. 500 whisper guys will enjoy this lol. Copper plated 1k grain projectiles would be the cats ass.

Details when you can. Would love to see some recovered projectiles.

Have you tried powder coating your cast bullets? It might be easier and more user friendly?

I just dont like the thought of paint in my barrel... i get it, it works or whatever. I watched alot on it. But the bullets i buy are copper coated, why not cast myself and coat if i get it down. It was more tinkering and wanting to do it, not really looking for the easy way lol, i allready have gas checks if i wanna go the easy quick route.

i use the cast inthe big bore stuff…..aka the pumpkinballers. i dont even run gas checks on my stuff…i just dont see the need.

for 30-06 type stuff….i think by the time you get done tinkering, you’ll have a lot more into it than if you just would have bought the bullets……assuming that one can indeed find bullets to buy. regardless, just knowing how to do it is excuse enough to fucks with it.

Me and my dad try all kinds of stuff. One of my favorites was casting 12 guage wadcutter slugs out of silver solder. The most beautiful shiny slug you have ever seen.
