Spain has had a system of fueros for hundreds of years. Under them, and under administrative processes taking their place, varying amounts of autonomy have been accorded to different communities, including Cataluña, which became part of the Spanish political construct when Aragon and Navarre were tossed into the mix with Castille/Leon.

2018 is filling up rapidly. I might have to hold off on fleshing this lecture series out until 2019.

I have no idea.

I will say (and this is from a statistically-significant group of one...) back in middle school, I had a Spanish teacher who was a really creepy dude from Guerinca. He survived the bombing, in fact. But he was creepy. And probably a cornholer. Whatever. That was in the late '70's and teachers were allowed to be weird then.

We had a kid in our class, though, whose parents were from Catalan. He was a fluent Spanish-speaker. But apparently spoke with a Catalan accent. I didn't know the difference. I only knew things like "Taco and Chalupa and Speedy Gonzales." Yo no Hablo... mucho. At least not that I'll admit.

But this teacher used to absolutely RIDE our classmate and make fun of him and beat up on his 'Catalan' accent or dialect. Referred to him, every time he came into the classroom, as "Catalan." Really. "Hey Catalan, Buenos Dias.... "

So there must be some kind of Spanish prejudice to Catalan in the same way as Americans tell Polish Jokes or Canuckians tell "Newfie" jokes. This 'memory' re-surfaced when I kept hearing about Catalonian independence. My correlation of the two may have NO basis in reality. But it was a very distinct memory of growing up. And a 'question' that apparently lurked in my lizard brain waiting to be awakened for 4 decades!

Beyond that... no idea. As far as I am concerned, the only worthwhile parts of Spain are Eibar (where they make beautiful guns) and Operto (where they make tasty and very snobby fortified wine.) The rest of the place... as far as I am concerned, Franco could have shot them all. What did they ever do for me?

Last I checked Operto was in Portugal. And it is really important.....Moron is a key base for us, where the US Marines have their rapid reaction force and the Air force needs to stage for ANY major operation in the deserts. Planning on motorcycling through Basquerbia (whatever) next year... on my way to Iceland. Ferry from UK to Northern Spain/Basque country.

Yes, that's a long way around. But before I head to Denmark... going to hang out for a week with Martin Pegler talking up sniper history, kicking up battlefield residuals and shooting Vickers... and he is between Basque country and Denmark. Sort of . As you mentioned, the gunmakers are almost all gone... and noone gives tours. But at least stopping and walking the streets will be fun.

Dog, you'd go crazy trying to throw your head around the whole thing. It isn't just Catalunya's relationship with Spain as a whole, but their relationship with other provinces. They accuse Madrid of oppressing them, but they, in turn, have been hard on other communities.
