I have been loading with Winchester primers but I am at a point where I have made some changes to the rifle and I'm going to work up another load from scratch using Winchester brass and 175gr SMK's. I have about 600 Winchester primers left and 1000 CCI's so if I'm gonna make the change now is the time.

Both will be just as available as the next before I need to buy more. Is there not that much of a difference? Should I stick with the Winchester and if I run out before I locate more will I be kicking myself when I have to use the CCI's. If it comes to that can I just load them to the same FPS and expect the same consistancy?

Still curious as to what your opinions are but just answered my own question beings that I did a recount and only have 600 Winchesters but 1300 CCI's. Looks like I'm switching primers.

Re: CCI or Winchester primers and why???

Winchester primers (I hear) burn a little hotter than the CCIs which could change pressures up a bit for your switch. I personally like CCI primers better because they seem to fit the primer pocket a little snugger. With that said…………any primers at this point and your GTG. Just my .02

We use both and have not seen a measurable differnce. We don't chrono every round. We only chrono now when seasons change or there is a consistant difference in POI. As long as your load is dependable, I say shootem'.

Re: CCI or Winchester primers and why???

Keeping in mind that Winchester does not market a designated Match primer, one can approach this two ways. Either they are all match quality, or they don't think a match quality primer is an essential component of their Supreme Match Ammunition line. I've made some pretty accurate loads with WLR's, and would substitute them for match primers in times of need. I held my CCI BR-4's in reserve and started loading with CCI 400's several months back, and my match ammo is more competitive than ever (mainly because I've gotten my marksmanship skills at least partway back up up out of their recent slump. Essentially, my shooting was't good enough to warrant the expenditure of match primers.).

WLR's were tested against others and came out at the brighter end of the 'brisance' scale.

The difference isn't as great as it's made out to be... not in 308 Win. anyway. I posted a bunch of data here from my testing:

My preferrence would be WLR. They seem to produce tight traces in a lot of occasions where all others don't. I don't know why, but I've seen it often.
