Chamber length, seating depth, blah blah blah...

Have a Rem700 .308: measured chamber length using OAL gauge and got about 2.953". I've been shooting 155 Scenars, 47gr Varget, FC & WCC brass at 2.815-2.820" with no pressure signs and am getting pretty good results, sub moa. Is it worth fiddling with seating depth more? I can go up to 2.9" mag length. Or should I just quit tweaking with all this "perfect load" crap and just shoot the piss out of my rifle?

Re: Chamber length, seating depth, blah blah blah...

Can you out shoot the rifle with its current load and configuration?

No? Shoot the piss out of it till you can.

Yes? Screw with it.

Bored one day: Screw with it at no great cost to you.

Cheers,

Doc

If sub moa is good enough for your purposes run with it and have fun.

I play until I have a load that shoots sub moa, then I work on my shooting, not my reloading.
No matter how much I'd like to believe different, misses are more often my fault than the load's......

I've been wondering the same thing about seating depth. It appears to me that most people run cartridges MUCH longer than the book standard of 2.800 to 2.810. I realize every gun is different.... but is it fair to generalize that longer is better? My wife certainly thinks so and fortunately for me, I'm much longer than mag length, but I digress....

My accurate load with 175 SMKs in a Rem 700 factory chamber is 2.185. I've tried to play with seating depth a bit but never really saw much difference. I'm wondering if I should just stop while I'm ahead or keep experimenting with seating depth.

Well said sobrbiker883. If it's sub MOA and you can live with it, then shoot the shit out of the barrel. Otherwise, you will be chasing your own tail soon enough, especially after a few beers...
