Changing the barrel on a DPMS SASS upper?

Re: Changing the barrel on a DPMS SASS upper?

I can't really answer that question... but generally the solution for red loc-tite is heat.

Any special tools required? I heard that DPMS has a special barrel nut or something like that.

Re: Changing the barrel on a DPMS SASS upper?

They do have a different size barrel nut for the 308 platform. Would probably be best to have the correct wrench and avoid any damage to the receiver trying to monkey it off another way.

Out of curiosity...why the barrel switch? Are you already running an 18" SASS barrel and your switching to the 16"?

Re: Changing the barrel on a DPMS SASS upper?

It should be pretty simple as long as you have the right tools.

Just know that the SASS barrel has a different size gas port (its slightly larger) so your bud will need the tube and gas block as well. I assume you had planned on doing this anyway though.

If it were me...I would probably stick with the 18" SASS barrel if that's what you've got. You may just search around on the forum a bit, but I would speculate that the SASS barrel is a better performer. Just my $.02

Re: Changing the barrel on a DPMS SASS upper?

The special wrench is about $25 from Midway or Brownells. I've taken apart several, they're easy.

If it doesn't come off right away get a heat gun on there and warm it up til it can't be touched with bare fingers. Then spin it off.

For a swap that includes the bolt head you might have a full 10min into the process the first time you do it.

Use a bench vise adn wooden soft jaws to get a good hold.

Thanks, that's kind of what I'm hoping.

FWIW the barrel he has is a 16" stainless one from fulton (I think they are made by krieger?). He had it turned down, fluted, and now he doesn't want it - he's a more money than brains/never happy type so throwing money at something and then moving on is the norm for him.

Re: Changing the barrel on a DPMS SASS upper?

I picked up the tools from brownells when I took the R-25 apart which is the same as DPMS. They werent cheap though I wanna say the upper block was 25-40 bucks then the wrench was 25-40 bucks. Added quite a bit onto my parts bill but the nice part about tools is if I ever need them again I have them. The wrench I picked up is the for LR-308 series and the AR-10 series and its a nice big chunk of steel.
