Armalite's server is down right now, but basically buy a target upper and a complete lower or a stripped lower and put one together. It will end up costing you under $1,400, whereas, if you buy the same gun complete it will cost you $1,800+. That is the most cost effective way to get a sub moa .308.

I am assuming you mean a .308 AR platform gun not just the armalite brand.
It is pretty hard to beat the basic DPMS LR308, they are under $1k complete and all the examples I have been exposed to have been excellent shooters.

How about reliability reports in weapons with high round counts? Prolonged fire as in a high round shooting class? How do they handle bangs and bumps along the way?

I personally have not messed around with anything DPMS. I've been sticking with the Armalite platform. I do work with one guy who was sponsored by DPMS and swore by them. I also work with two other fellas that were on a Blackwater contract and used DPMS .308s while training, then deployed with KACs; they claimed to have preferred the DPMSs.
Like I said though, I do prefer the Armalites.

The mags are more expensive for the A/R 10 (Armalite)than the LR 308 (DPMS). I put together my LR 308 with an AP4 upper & DPMS lower & getting +MOA

Take my experience with a grain of salt, but I tried Armalite with an A4 barrel, and then a Noveskse 21" barrel, and with extensive reloading I could not get a sub 1" group at 100.
I then dumped the Ar 10 and went with a bolt DTA 308. It was easy with my reloading to achieve .3" groups. With this info should be noted that my most accurate rifle at 100 yards is a Sun Devil 20" AR 15 in .223 shooting consistent .2" groups at 100 yards.
Also my shooting experience with the 22" DTA in .308 has shown that the going gets tough with drop past around 750-850 yards, and have shot with a 308 as far as 1060 (after that I go to the 338 LM).
So with this all I am saying is that there is a big difference in expected accuracy between AR 10 and AR 15, and that a man sized target at 800 with a 308 is doable every shot with a rifle that shoots .3 at a 100, but maybe not so much with one that shoots 1-2" at 100.
Again grain of salt, and just IMO.

You must have been doing something wrong with your loads... I get consistent .75 inch at 100 yard groups with my Noveske 18 inch barrel, and I am shooting factory ammo.
Then again, they do throw out this disclaimer: "This rifle is designed and intended for use with high quality 7.62x51 NATO ammunition..."

Yeah, probably. But, I did shoot some 168 grain Federal GMM thought it with 1.5" groups. My reloading was with 155 Lapua Sceners, 168 SMK, and 175 SMK with both Varget and IMR 8208 powders (and 6 months of hard trouble shooting with the avbove). Maybe just bad luck with the barrels that I got from Armalite, and Noveske, but It was enough to make me very comfortable at dumping it with a fairly substantial loss.

Interesting. I appreciate the response. I'm actually leaving the bolt action 308 game and am selling my 700p. Great gun. Great accuracy. Just ready for a different direction in the hopes of streamlining my training. (I shoot ar15).
I do not have any intentions of reloading. I'm interested in beginning this experiment if for no other reason than to keep an accurate log to share my experience with others. After finding a cheap (relative) round and a factory match round my rifle likes, I'm going to shoot a ton of both and hopefully learn some things. Trying to be realistic with my accuracy expectations.

CMMG just came out with a decent looking rifle for $1300 but supposedly they're coming out with a 308 rifle with forged receivers rather than the billet receivers so many DPMS patterned companies have. It is scheduled for this year and under $1k and like their current rifle will take SR-25/DPMS mags. So I guess what I'm saying is if you're not in a hurry you might think about waiting just to see, something like this could really change the game as far as 308 rifles go.

+1 for the dpms
i have taken my 308lr hunting though i do not recommend it. the thing is heavy and hard to hold steady when your standing and shooting at a running target. if you can set it on something though your good to go. as for targets. i have produced sub moa groups at 100 with the 175 smk, the hunting version of the 185 vld and the hornady 168 hpbt. i did get a sub moa at 400 with the smk a few times but haven't taken the 168s out that far yet. still working on them but i have high expectations.

First, you really should consider reloading. It is worth it both in cost savings and being able to make rounds for your specific purposes on-demand. Secondly, it all starts with how much you are able to spend.

I just bought a 6.5 Creedmoor DPMS that I will shoot on Monday for 1075. I added some things to it to make it nice in my opinion, I cannot stress enough a better charging handle, son of a motherless goat do the stock ones blow ass with a scope.
This piece here, the 20 MOA Badger Base, got this from Mike @ CS Tactical, so nice, I can now mount my "normal" ring height on all of my Semi-Auto Rifles.
I should add that this rifle is heavy, I mean like Christie Alley holding to buckets filled with mercury.
I just bought a 6.5 Creedmoor DPMS that I will shoot on Monday for 1075. I added some things to it to make it nice in my opinion, I cannot stress enough a better charging handle, son of a motherless goat do the stock ones blow ass with a scope.

Cheap and AR 10. Now thats a contradiction in terms!
I'm gona go with DPMS on the buy option.

I put together an AR10A4 carbine using Armalite's 16" chrome lined barrel. I bought cosmetic blem upper and lower receivers for $175.00 each at .762sass.com. I don't have the total cost of the rifle handy, but you can see the potential here. The rifle sprays Gold Medal Match 2.5 moa, but consistently prints moa with 45.5gr Varget & 155gr Scenars at 2600fps. I went with Armalite because I like chrome lined barrels. I like the AP4, but I think I have something better now.

i tried and scrounged for used this and that to build a sub $1k rifle. may have done it if i was gonna build an AP4. but along the way i wanted this and that and ended up with what you see below in my sig photo. if you want cheap price and like anything thats available, buy it. if you build, you will pay a little more but have exactly what you want. oh, im at $1400ish with mine

No worries. Your post was a bit vague & without a price range I don't really know what to tell you. As far as hard use goes I know a couple people who have gone through carbine classes with DPMS cheapie 308 carbines and they were fine but that's hardly a decent sample size.

Hearing that any made it through is good news but I'm on board with the "sample size of one" being a bad precedent.
I'd obviously like to pay as little as possible to accomplish what I need but it's more important to get what I want than be concerned with what I pay. In other words, it costs what it costs but it needs to be worth it.

Since the vast majority of platforms are following the DPMS/SR25 spec it's biggest detractor is simply that it is alone on an island with respect to reciever dimensions, proprietary parts etc.

I got a RRA varmint, 26" barrel, and i am very happy with it, it is proprietary, but i waasnt looking to change it, i have heard it can use FAL mags in ingh or metric, but some people have had problems with using them, i got some extra mags directly from RRA, and they work fine..
It shoots sub MOA, and has had absolutely no problems, but it is one HEAVY bitch to lug around!!!!
