Yep, get the starter set...you can add stuff later.
I'd go with 20 lines per inch or wider, to learn with.

I used Dembart also and had great luck. Only others I have heard of is Gunline? but don't know how they compare to Dembart or if there is any other brands available.
Tripwire, I would think there would be a somewhat disadvantage to cutting on the pull vs the push as your line/workarea would be covered by the tool and your hand. Thinking that would be a hinderance and disadvantage???? I only checkered 5-6 stocks before I got out of the wood stock building business in 91 when I lost my shop do to a move for alot of yrs. No money to be made doing it around here then and really wouldn't be now!

Kinda frustating and really tedious but very gratifying to admire a well done job with all them little 'scratches'!!! Only done 18 and 22 LPI, can't imagine a complicated 32LPI pattern like many of the Guild members have made their rep on. Get a good cradle or make one you want, really good light and a set of them head mounted magnifying visors if you don't already have one. Then set on yer porch, checker and plink at illegals with your 10 when you are living the life! Oh, and your chippendale dude rubbing your neck and back and.....

And I do it left handed too....<grins>
I find better control of the tool pulling instead of pushing regarding the tool slipping. As far as seeing what's going on, that's probably personal preference, but I actually like seeing the tool coming towards me instead of going away. My tools have a bent shaft to form a window aft of the tool so "seeing" is easy either way. Some tools have a "split" shaft for the same reason. To each his own.

I always thought those with 2 shafts and cutter in the middle was to see where you been and not where you are goin??? LOL
