Very accurate long range rifle and round. Not cheap though. Around $13,500 for the rifle and about $4 a round. Not sure how the actual Chey Tac business is going though. Other companies like EDM make rifles in that caliber as well.

As the company was going through its ultimate failure there were also some serious quality issues that did not get resolved.

Unfortunately Chey Tac is no longer in business as chey tac. They were losing too much money and more or less went bankrupt. The actual m200 is a fantastic weapon that is one of the most accurate you'll find. But as said earlier, they are chambered for cash! lol

The cartridge is still alive and .408-based rifles are being made in numbers these days. If you want something as close as possible to the M200, you need to buy an XM04 from EDM Arms, then buy the barrel shroud/bipod/handle accessories from RND Precision in CO.

EDMs references the availability of a barrel shroud/bipod set up. Not sure if its their own, Is it RnDs?
The 338 lapua rifle is enticing at least from a ammo affordability stand point. I wish they'd make a scaled down version in. 308 or even 300have win mag.

I just goggled Cheytac and their website pops it. It appears to be functional. Did the "original" cheytac sell out to new owners or ???
I'm not trying to derail the topic or anything like that, I am just curious, as I know someone how has talked about buying a rifle from cheytac.

AFAIK Chey-tac is belly up. A functioning website can't be used as an indicator. You could get the phone number off the site and find out, toss up a post to keep us informed. I know the original design of the M200 came from EDM based off of the Windrunner. I think there was some sort of buisness partnership a while back and one split off to do Chey-tac. I heard that a lack of customer service, sheer cost of the rifle system, and some issues relating to trigger failure are what led to their demise. The EDM Windrunner is a sure-shot and proven platform, and I hear they are gtg to work with. Just less frills than what Chey-tac included. They also offer platforms in .338LM, .300WM and the mini-Windrunner in .308Win.

That's where much of the confusion about the rifle began. Bill continued to sell the slightly scaled down model of the M96 as the XM04, keeping the original Windrunner configuration. At the same time, Cheytac was making their modified Windrunner through a different source until they went belly up.
During this time, many of us bought XM04s from Bill over the M200 for the simple fact that it was nearly half the price. A select few were able to get M200 parts that allowed them to convert their XM04s into the M200 configuration and Lawton made some M200 barrels for XM04s for a bit as well. Around 2008 Lloyd at RND Precision started making a barrel shroud/bipod assembly for a select few Windrunner owners and eventually this became popular. Somewhere around 2009 Bill licensed or sold the design of his .308WIN Mini-Windrunner to Nemesis Arms. Not long afterward it appears he licensed the XM04 with extended bipod (not barrel shroud mounted) to THOR, which is essentially Knesek Guns in AR, who were also a Cheytac dealer. In the last year, Bill decided to make his own barrel shroud/bipod modification for his rifles available.

The whole Cheytac "thing" was their patented "controlled spin" technology. Long story short is the barrel had a specific twist combined with a Lost River lathe turned bullet (they were very well made). The controlled spin basically was like throwing a good spiral football. As you throw the football and it starts its downward path its nose tilts down letting it fly farther. Same thing with the bullet. It engraved large rifling on the bullet that slowed the spin down more than without and let the bullet nose down and thus go farther more accurately and pass through transonic and subsonic better. Great design HORRIBLE company.

Dogtown gets it pretty close. In this thread ( http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1708546&page=1 ) I mention the actual production run of EDM for Cheytec and the "build type" of those rifles. That really sets the stage and, if you read between the lines, explains why QC really lapsed between the EDM "matched" sets and the earliest Cheytec "build to completion" rifles sets the stage. IMO, the earliest genesis of the "trouble" we would come to see in Cheytec can be found by understanding the manner that Cheytec dealt with EDM. It was not pretty and EDM quickly broke all associations. The story goes that from then on, Ritchie would hunt down any Cheytec supplier facility producing receivers and have a judge close them down. No, Cheytec never made their own receivers, outsourcing was all they had until perhaps the very end.
For all the reasons posted, and a whole host of others not posted, Cheytec is no more.
EDM has also fallen on hard times. It appears Bill is in Hurricane Utah, Kerry (the man responsible for every machined receiver) has left California and maybe presently in AZ. Now Bill, was always, always. always against the Cheytec free float tube and carry handle. Now, it appears that EDMs new rifles have the tube and the above barrel axis fully rotating bipods. Equally interesting, NO rifles can be sent to Kerry (only the barrel nut), odd at best. In any event the EDM story (which really IS the Cheytec story) is hazy now at best.
Otherwise, Nemesis Arms, after finally addressing some 32 important improvements to the EDM chasis is, once again, sold out and as busy as can be. In fact they just bought a *hit load of new equipment, here are some shots. Nemesis Arms, now has a speed barrel nut, no break bar, Ti Nitrating, new Timney trigger exclusively made for the Vanquish. And, get ready, a custom stretched .338 Lapua frame is in design.

Good stuff. Have always wanted to upgrade my M96 with the adjustable stock and better bipod assembly but it is just a BIG nut to crack. Still giving a hard look at the .308 also.

No, EDM is no longer making the .308 Mini - that's Nemesis. Bill continues making the big bore rifles.

No, EDM is no longer making the .308 Mini - that's Nemesis. Bill continues making the big bore rifles.

Sorry, I got to remember and cycle back through the threads...
I will list out a number of them, perhaps in order of importance:
1. Rear cam, that would be the rear bolt camming action. Rather than being a series of separate pieces produced and attached to the bolt that can produce failure if they are cocked or misaligned while the bolt is open, the cam is now part of the machined receiver and bolt handle assembly. Much greater bearing surface and camming action (300%).
2. Elimination of the safety hole on the right side of the receiver. Dust, dirt, debris conflict...gone. Custom Timney bottom safety trigger is used.
3. Eliminated the side pins near the barrel nut. No moisture debris or rust formation. Lock-up is now on a heat treated rib ring to stainless spring/ball interface.
4. Ambi safety.
5. Lower trigger housing open up.
6. Bolt tubes are now stainless, nitrated.
7. Firing pin Steel (tensile strength) moved from 4140 (bends/breaks) now S7, stainless spring steel.
8. Same for Sear
9. Same for sear sleeve...all three above...no wear.
10. Machine the receiver...edm it...heat treat it....ahh no. A completely different process is used.
11. Nitrate on barrel, receiver, bolt tubes, stock rods.
12. over-travel stop on mags. Delrin followers not nylon..
13 Rods are 50% harder..
14. Finger hole safety "lead ins"
15 No more 12L14, rather 1018.
16. Proper Ops Inc angle facing on barrel.
17. Bench not Winchester reamers used.
18. Fast feed wells
19. New geometry on rail available for s.t.o.m.p.
20. Monopod rear stock rail
21. All the backpack, bag and case changes...
etc. etc. etc.
Allot of internal geometry changes..dry firing is now ok, bolt face lock-up at full 6 o'clock, adjustable cheek piece, storage space, etc. You guys get the idea...
Now as to the question of larger cartridges, Dogtown is correct, although as mentioned above. Nemesis is in process on the full 338 Lapua stretch on a great new design.

Now as to the question of larger cartridges, Dogtown is correct, although as mentioned above. Nemesis is in process on the full 338 Lapua stretch on a great new design.
Solid post. That brings some clarity into a very confusing subject for a lot of people (differences between Thor, Knesek, EDM, Nemesis, RND, and Cheytac).
I bought a THOR XM408 from Knesek a couple years ago and I have yet to group any better than 7MOA at 100 meters. Yes, you read that right: THOR XM408 shooting 7 MOA @ 100 meters. Something is catastrophically wrong with that weapon system and I've tried to take Knesek/THOR up on their "lifetime warranty" for "functionality and accuracy" but with no success. I've since taken a more aggressive approach by filing a case with BBB for starters (they have BBB rating of F by the way).
Oh and yes, I checked the parallax before shooting 7 MOA. haha Hell, I can group better with my FN 5.7 at 100! The only thing worse than the XM408 is having to deal with the people who sold it to me (Knesek Guns).

That's all odd. Because I called (I have them in my contacts on my cell phone) and spoke with CheyTac in the middle of last year about their platforms my buddy was looking into (and still is today) and they answered and said that they had some ready2go 300's and 338's and 408's there. We spoke for quite a while about the rounds and which would be better suited for the conditions and their flight paths (as to when they come into their own) and he was very nice and informative and never did I get the impression that there were any troubles in any way in fact quite the opposite, so this all comes as a suprize. EroOptics has them listed in their gun offerings, Alex an I (about a year ago) had conversation about them when I was placing an order with him and he spoke highly about them and as a side note I asked him about Knesek and their Thor model and he had nothing good to say about them at all (in reading the above post) I can see that Alex was spot-on with his assessment, 7moa, Good Lord, I'd be at least getting someone to look at it and see what the hell they did or didn't do.
