When the Ultimate Sniper Stock came out in the 1990's I was captaining a Marine Corps League Detachment Shooting Team. We were standardized on Savage 10FP .308's and one of the team members bought the Ultimate thingie. We all shot over the next few years, and said member tried valiantly to justify his purchase to himself and any of us who would listen, and we were all listening.
While the stock is very good in detail, the overall package had a shortcoming that could be neither ignored, nor remedied. That sloped front end was not at all good for shooting off a bag.
Now the usual response would be, "So use a bipod". Most did. I found that I just wasn't all that good with a bipod, and thanked my lucky stars that I didn't need to make do with the Ultimate and without a bipod.
Choate makes a good stock, and I have several, including a pair of the Tacticals on a pair of Savage 11VT's, one .223, and one .308. I would personally recommend the Tactical for the Stevens, but I would also do some homework to ensure you got the right model, if such actually still exists. This is because the Savage and Stevens have diverged in their configurations several times in the last decades, and I'm no longer sure which fits what.
