Good evening gentlemen,

I come to you first time posting seeking advice on my first rifle purchase.

First some background b/c like every other forum some is always in order.

I am NOT ex military or LE, never hunted before in my life. Been to the gun range, yessir, shooting rifles...never. Skeet and pistols os of right now.

I JUST hit 30 years old (if that happens to be relevant to anyone) and ever since the past couple mass shooting and our 2E has come under attack I've been actively bumping up my time table on completing my "arsenal".

Obviously, a rifle is in order and I've yet to find anything that really comes close to the price, features, accuracy and reliability of the FNH SPR A1(a) in .308.

I've had my eye on the Remington 700 Milspec 5r b/c of the SS barrel, action and rifling but for 5-700 dollars more I can get the FN.

I've also thought about going custom and have been looking at Surgeon and GAP. But for "Z-day", SHTF, paper punching, hunting and long range fun I can't really think of a better package than the FN.

What do you guys think? I've seen nothing but great things in favor of the FN but is there something I'm missing out there? Savage, Tikka, Sako, Winchester, Remington?

I'm trying to keep the cost under 2k, which should give me plenty of wiggle room but a "fresh pair of eyes" never hurts.

Hopefully this isn't "beating a dead horse" for you guys, I promise I've used the search button! lol

Thanks!

The FN is a nice rifle as is the 700 5r, but if you're budgeting around 2k or a shade under I'd give Russell at Scout supply company and have him help you figure out something nice for you. His turn around time is usually pretty good so you wouldn't have to wait too long.

The 5r for 500-700 less, sell the 5r HS stock for an easy $200, you are now $700-$900 ahead. That gets you about any stock/chassis you could want.

but yes, there are a lot of rifles you could be looking at that would fill your needs.

You could build... Cheap rem 700 $400, sell everything but the action, say action ends up costing $300.
Barrel w/installation $600
Eliseo chassis

Total would be right around that $2k

Savage?
Long range precision action, already has the target accutrigger
Pre fit barrel
Top of the line stock

Again, you're within your $2k limit

I went with a straight up factory tikka sporter this time myself, came from a custom built savage in a McMillan

Therein lies the problem and solution, so many options so little time.
