Cleaning a bolt?

Hey all,
So when I want to clean the gunk off my bolt what do ya'll recommend? I ask because I assume anything that leaves a film or residue could cause issues or I am I horribly wrong about that? Would ya'll recommend something like non-chlorinated brake cleaner / Gun Scrubber or Hornady's One Shot with the dyna lube better? Just curious. Thanks for the info!

Any generic household oil on a microfiber cloth is what I use. It’s been saturated with years of various oils and lubes so I say it doesn’t really matter. I smidge of grease in the back of the lugs and the cocking piece.

In all seriousness... Clean it off, no need for anything more than some gun oil to clean. For lube, I've used white lith grease, axle grease, motor oil, Butch's gun oil (smells amazing), CLP, etc....

Like @spife7980 said, some grease on the back of the lugs.

I usually just strip the bolt the best I can and throw it into the ultrasonic cleaner for a couple cycles. I actually tossed one of my whole actions in after last season to deep clean it.

I once put a whole car in an ultrasonic cleaner .... one piece at a time... and it didn't cost me a dime

That’s one impressive sonic cleaner, can’t believe you got a whole engine block in there. On a serious note throwing a bolt in a cheap sonic cleaner from harbor freight is just easier then scrubbing it.

Thank you, gents! I have the bolt apart (Savage 110EP) and in the US. Had to "kickstart" the bolt but after that it was easy. As far as greasing the cocking piece... light coat inside and out I assume? Thank you again!

Update: Well that ended...badly Launched the 1/8" detente ball for the extractor to fuck knows where! Meh... Ordered 20 from Brownells. Lesson learned.

Ultrasonic for the win on all small parts.

A note of caution if you intend to use this rifle if very cold temps. Use little to no lite synthetic oil on any of the firing pin assembly surfaces. This includes the sides of the cocking piece.

I do. I use the included attachment for cleaning the part that the bolt lug lock into and attach a chamber mop to sop up any cleaning solution that gets past the bore guide seal.

Get yourself heavy duty Automotive display magnet roll ... magnetic signs that go on cars. Do all your work on that. It's not going to alleviate all the springs and detents from flying but it will surely help. You don't want to do that then put a towel over the part and your hands but it means you're doing the work blind.
