Just got everything mocked up last night on my rifle. 700 SPS Tactical .308, Seekins 20 MOA base and Seekins 30 mm rings in LOW flavor (recommended by SWFA). All this holding a SWFA 5-20x50. Mocked it up and with the BC caps I cant even get a piece of paper between scope and barrel. With caps off its PERFECT! Question is do I go with MED rings or trim the caps? Or both? Looked at Seekins sight and the difference is only .05" if I read that right. I wonder will SWFA take the lows back since they have already been on the gun and a scope set in them?? I know the lower the better. Discuss.

Re: Clearance on Butler Creek Caps....Question??

I would see if SWFA would take your rings back. If so, swap them with the mediums. 1/20" clearance is enough for a .308.

If they won't, then trim the caps for clearance or use bikini covers. But I think SWFA will be willing to help you out. They're good like that.

Post a pic. If just the BC rubber collar is touching, break out some sandpaper and remove some of the offending rubber.

Re: Clearance on Butler Creek Caps....Question??

I would not change the scope height to accommodate caps. The 50mm butler creek cap is rather large, like having a can of Kiwi at the end of your scope. I would either trim the cap or go with a scope-coat.

Re: Clearance on Butler Creek Caps....Question??

I'd get a little higher rings.

I would also scrap the BC caps since they are garbage and you will go through a set a month. Call a NF dealer and get a 50MM NF bikini cover. You can zip tie it to the tube and it fits the SS5-20 perfectly.

Re: Clearance on Butler Creek Caps....Question??

I hate to change rings to accommodate the caps myself. Everything is perfect without them. Im right about 3/16" gap with NO caps. There cheap, gona try to clearance them and if that doesnt work might look at the NF bikini. Are there any other alternatives to flip up caps? Another brand?

Re: Clearance on Butler Creek Caps....Question??

Well called SWFA today. I was hoping that since SWFA was on my way home from work, kinda. That I could swing in and pick up a set of Med rings (pay full price) and come home and ship the Lows back for a credit on my card. That would be too easy huh....your right. They wont do that. I have to pay 15% restocking fees unless I do a ring for ring swap at the same time. This kinda erks me really. I went off the recommendation of what THEY said and now I have to pay the price in some way.

- pay the restocking fee, around $18 bucks
- pay the gas to go back to SWFA ($30-40 bucks) and swap FTF
- or ship mine back and be at the mercy of them of when they ship my Med rings back out.

Re: Clearance on Butler Creek Caps....Question??

you have another option to consider

put a shim under your scope base they make shims in .001 .005 and .010 i bet that would get you fixed right up and probably your cheapest option too .

if you pm me i can tell you were to get the shims from

Re: Clearance on Butler Creek Caps....Question??

I dealt with SWFA and they sent me the wrong scope rail. I took a picture of what I had (this is what they told me to do) and then they sent me the wrong one. The guy I ttalked to about getting the right one sent said I wouls also have to pay a 15% restocking fee. I ask to speak to the manager and after I told him what went down he waived the restocking fee.

I believe the way it works is.....if YOU order the wrong thing, they will expect a restocking fee. If THEY send you the wrong thing they may still want a restocking fee but a chat with the manager will fix it. At least this was my experience.

Well I talked with some lady when I called and told her the deal. I was being too nice I guess. Gona call back tomorrow after I have been up for 24 hours and go at it again, LOL!
