Night Vision Closest shot ever taken at night ???

Last night was closest range of any shot I ever taken on Coyotes called-in . Was shot .. ( 8 paces ) from the rifle.

It's all bailed and clean hay fields & Cloudy dark nigh . I Pull the truck up on some property and walked down the fence line backup myself against some dark shade, small tree and brush and set-up the tripod and rifle .
Pull out the electronic call turn it on and set it out about 10 feet in front of me . Then go back and hit the remote . ( NOTHING ) FUCK batteries were dead . So I change them out and put Call back out . Then now my pvs14 Red light started blinking .. SHIT, So then I change that battery out on it . Then it starts to sprinkling a little rain on me . The night was starting a little off color but nothing to bad

So Now all set and I get my gameface on and about to push the remote with a little Cottontail . When I see a farm cat walking out in the field from direction of there house . I look at it about 150 yard out there, then I hit the remote to Call & it squeals out .
About 10 seconds I see something running hard right at the direction of the farm cat sitting out there . then I see 2 animals running right at the cat . Then I make out a Blacktail Doe in-front with the Coyote fast right behind it . The Coyote hearing the Call and on the run, Must have kicked-up the Doe that was bedded down and Doe thought the Coyote was it's target .

So now the Doe and the Coyote both run right over the top of the cat sitting in the field and both Doe and Coyote coming-in HOT and right strait at me as i am buried in the brush night shade .
They are coming in so fast and close, that I bark to get the coyote to stop he skids-in and looks right at me . then I 'POP' him with the .30-223 right there in front of me .
The Blacktail Doe freezes, then stomp and snorts a loud blast of air then hauls ass out of there . I look for the farm cat that just got it's Ass run-over and it Nowhere to be seen .

Couple night ago I pulled into a blueberry fields to do a stand . turned the lights off & put on the helmet and click on the NV . I step out the truck and take 2 steps and look. and in-front of me, Coyotes running right by me about 20 feet . Been hunting at night for years and every once in awhile you see weird shit happen .

OK .. I did sit out past dark into the daylight morning at a farm last week to spot and shot Coyote for the 1st time in about 6 years .
That really was 'Weird' . I felt Dirty like I didn't belong there in the light .

Once I was night hunting and I had walked out in the field and spotted some deer running along ways out with the thermal. THey ran towards me and then at about 100 yds I saw a yote was chasing them. Threw a bark out to stop it and dropped in right there. Waited a second to let everything calm down but continued checking the scene with the thermal. Decided to go get the yote and bring him back to where I was before I went in to my stand. After I made it back I noticed the wind shifted and was basically ruining my stand there but where I was standing still stood a chance. I had the fox pro at my feet and was calling while I was standing just looking almost all the way around me with the thermal. I of course check out a little ways from me and not right at me because its a field with very short crops. But there is a very small brush line that leades to me. After a while I had been scanning and a white spot just so happened to catch my eye. And it was right on top of me. It was so close I couldn't tell if it was a coon, bobcat, or fox. I had my PVS 14 still in my pack and that night I was using a D760 and a FLir M24 Recon (640 Rez) it was so close and sitting down that I couldn't really make it out and the 760 wouldn't focus on it. Popped it with the 223 and it turned out to be a fox. (All were in season in AR) No telling how long it had been sitting there just watching. It was less than 10 yards. Still makes me think about something just sitting there watching you while your confident that you will see ANYTHING in that location with a thermal. LOL Good times. I ended up calling up 11 predators that night.

I had the IR focal beam on them whole time from start to finish, but in the end . All I could do was just put the Laser dot on the spot where I thought the 'POI off-set was ' from the barrel bore, and pull .

I usually do a squeak with a pocket squeaker to get Coyotes to stop and pose for that second to squeeze-off the trigger . It was so close and I was feeling pressured with it coming so fast and non-stop . I thought the Doe and Coyote were going to just run right into me for sure . I would have been like one of those idiots on the YouTube with a pissed-off deer kicking my ass into the ground .

HAha . I had one of those 4 or 5 years ago, with 760 . Sitting and calling in field for a while in a warm summer night . Was there for a while sitting and scanning with helmet, then turn my head left about 120 deg. and there was a young Coyote laying flat like a cat in the grass and just watching me about 25 ft. away . Must have been there for a while just watching me. .. in your face shot is NOT the 760's strong point .

11 in one night is a LOT of shooting .

NICE on the POI offset! At that distance was truly a point and shoot moment. Good shooting!

Edit, where do you hunt in OR? I used to hunt some really big Mullies near the Goose Lake area. Incredibly country and steep terrain in some parts.

looked on the map, I never been to goose lake but it looks to be down in the SE corner of OR.
No Mulies here by me . Mostly Blacktail in the Valleys around me and they are pretty nocturnal, So I Always see them running around . the Blacktail are already getting Velvet on the antlers now . They turn early here in the coast valleys than Deer the east side of the state.

I mostly hunt the Agriculture lands and small farms local in this valley west of Portland area and other county areas . Coyotes here are Nothing like the Open Range dogs you see guys calling and shooting on the Vids. Posted here . Not many big wide open lands .
With the Pic. on this Post . I was hunting a small farm for these Coyotes because I got asked by the owners to thin-out a few that been harassing there animals .
Coyotes here in my area live with people and around human habits of life and Den up around farms and urban areas . They are educated pretty fast and most times you work for what you get . You really have to learn there habits and travels because 95% of the time they just don't run right in to your call fast .
Sometimes I cant even say that I out of the city limits when calling shooting Coyotes . The AG. and farms just come up and into the small towns, neighborhoods around here .
My area, Coyotes here 'Are Educated fast' and they learn the humans habits from birth, with learning 'Who and What' lives in there area's . Then they work around the farmers or property owners lives and habits with also there animals that they own and there habits .

This was one of my closest kills. Heard this guy crashing to my left I could just catch glimpses of him between the trees. He came out right in front of me and snorted. He was my first IR laser kill and was about 4-5 feet away!!!!

I was laying prone one night and shot a coyote that stepped out in front of me just at the end of the barrel. Hit it low and it went wild, shot it again at about 5 feet from the muzzle. Was covered in blood.

No, its not. That's one reason I'm going to add a 740 and a M845 to the collection one day. But I guess the ANVIS 9s with a dbal-D2 or PEQ15 will do that job if need be.

And unfortunately, I didn't get shots off on all of them that night. That was a real learning experience to say the least. It was my first night hunt by myself in LA. A couple of em I just saw run by me. Thick Louisiana country can be challenging. BUt I have a better hold on the situation these days. Got a good bit of em that night but should have brought home 11. I got half of them or so.

7 feet. Standing inside an open barn (super dark). A coyote walked around the corner and stopped broadside at 7 feet looking at the cattle away from me. The DTNVS and PEQ15 were so unnecessary I almost laughed out loud as I popped on the laser.
