When my rifle came in I was waiting for my SS 10X to come back from Bushnell. I had a 0MOA EGW base and set of rings off a 700 I sold a while back. (As a side note, they couldn't fix it so they sent me a new one +1 for Bushnell CS). My original plan was to possibly cut the barrel back to more closely mimic my LTR. When it came in though the metal is so nice I just can't bring myself to do it.
The rifle:
I got a chance to take the 40X out last Sunday for about an hour. I didn't have time to try a bunch of different types of ammo so I took some Federal Premium Gold Medal (719). Next time I'll get the chance to try some of the 711B (slower) and some FGMM I've also got laying around.
I was going to zero at 25 and get the dope for 25,50,75, & 100yds. I started at the 25yd line and shot a few groups.
5rds, .439" at the widest
8 or 10rds can't remember, .491" at the widest (the big holes are from my .444 from the last range trip. I didn't realize I was out of targets)
By this point it was getting almost too cold for my southern ass but I moved out to 50yd. I couldn't feel my trigger finger and rushed a couple groups. I think dropping the last round or two low is from a combination of temperature effecting me and my pace.
5rds, .581"
I could tell the rifle will do much better but quite honestly I was ready to head home. It was about 19 degrees and the wind had picked up so I shot one 100yd group and called it a day. The group at 100 is what I'd call "rapid fire" for the 40X. I didn't even try to get the come ups, just held 2mil (IIRC) and let them go. Even rushing I could see the potential.
5rds, 1.658"
Overall, I couldn't be happier with the rifle. I can't wait til it get's a little warmer and I can take my time with it. I don't know how you boys that live "up there" accomplish anything this time of year
