Was out at the grasslands shooting today and the USFS Officer stopped by my location for a chat. He mentioned to me that there will be a temporary shooting ban beginning 25 June. Also that with the temps and lack of precipitation that they will close it down for a while, it could be a week or longer. He said it is not permanent, just precautionary. I am sure the Fires up north have a lot to do with it.

Either way, if you plan on going out next week, give them a call before you drive way out there.

I am not affiliated with the USFS, just want to save some fellow hiders some gas.

Btw had a great range day, 102 degrees, no wind. My FDAC was spot on.

One more thing, I asked about Prairie Dog and Yote hunting, he did not have an answer. In the past they have still allowed hunting as long as the area is not restricted. Just give them a call.

Wish I was smart enough to check the hide before I went out there Friday. Ended up taking my guns for a nice ride. Hopefully with the rain the ban should be lifted. It was good of you to post this.

Re: CO- Pawnee Grasslands temp shooting closure

I have been on an email list for updates on the shooting ban in the grasslands. I just received an email from the Dianna Moore of the Forest Service that the shooting ban will be lifted tomorrow. Checked the website just now and it has not been updated yet, but suspect that it will be shortly.

Re: CO- Pawnee Grasslands temp shooting closure

Here is a copy of the Email I received.

Hi folks! Good news – the shooting ban has been rescinded, effective August 2, 2012, on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and the PAWNEE NATIONAL GRASSLAND! Target shooting will be allowed beginning tomorrow. Just remember – everyone who’s been wanting to target shoot may be out there all at the same time. Use caution, be sure to let folks know where you are so they are not shooting toward you, and be sure you are not shooting their way. Also, Just a reminder: use caution if you are using steel jacket/steel core ammunition, as those will still cause sparks and could cause a fire. No exploding targets or tracer rounds, as those are not allowed to be used on public land at all.

Also, we will have researchers out on the grassland from time to time, so scope the areas out to be sure you’re not shooting the research and range folks! We appreciate that!

Have a safe and fun weekend!
