college paid for by the government

Re: college paid for by the government

Hmmmm, CH31, Stipends, and 60% Disability are all tax free.

Pell Grants, only taxable if the total taxable income goes over a 'certain amount'...1098T has it listed as scholarships that goes against whatever the difference is onto the 1040 as income at a 'certain level'
- Panty 6 - Tax, Business, Farming, Pay, etc Accounting services

If she is working, that is taxable income. If she is single, higher tax bracket applies. My guess is she needs a better accountant

Re: college paid for by the government

Hmmm Pell Grants!! How's that working out!!

True Story and pretty pathetic also:

Though it's been a few years now as both my daughters have graduated from college about 5 years ago.

I remember vividly their first day in Freshman orientation each of them called me at work and said: "Dad the first part of orientation was telling those who had Pell grants and other type Grant monies to not go out and buy a car" They both said they seemed to be addressing a certain segment of students who weren't paying attention and had head phones on listening to music.

If you will do a little research you will find how out of control this "Federal Aid" has become. It has contributed to the ridiculous costs and tuition increases that has made it almost non affordable for many to send their kids to college.

But hey I missed the part in our Constitution that entitles everyone to a college education!!!

I am currently in graduate school at remember the people your daughters described. In my freshman science courses they did not last very long before dropping. I myself received some pell grants as I put myself through college. But I suppose I was responsible with the money and now have a master's and am working through med school.

Re: college paid for by the government

I got a library card and am happy doing blue collar work.

I have the Post 9/11 GI Bill and Vocational Rehab through the VA. No plans on really using them unless to get certifications.

Re: college paid for by the government

totally dig that you're happy right now, and thats fantastic, but consider knocking out your Gen Ed requirements, even just as something to do. That way, when you do go for a cert or what have you, you won't have to spend so long knocking out GERs. Learning new things rocks, and you get to meet new people. Who Knows, you may even be able to have a positive influence on some of the kids in your class, I helped a kid last year make a solid decision on joining USAR and becoming a medic. And it certainly beats the crap out of watching reality TV.

Re: college paid for by the government

Aid is what it is, 'aid'. It all depends on how youo use it. I got hurt on the job and got Pell grants, and vocational rehabilitation to go beck to college. took me 5 years but I ended up with a degree from the University of Virginia. In those 5 years I missed 1 class and that was on a friday when it was snowing like a bitch.

I remember on night after working and school I was just dead tired and threw the books in a pile on the table thinking Ill study tomorrow. I heard this little voice in the back of my head that said " Some little grandmother paid 20 cents out of her SS check so your ass could go to school...get those books open and study now.". I took that to heart and graduated with a B+.

SO AID CAN BE A GOOD THING IF YOU USE IT WELL.

Without breaking the rules of this forum, suffice it to say the Contract from our pappies is dead, The Republic is dead, and the IRS is never getting any of my income again, and hasn't since 2009. A degree is worthless to me, unless I'm willing to violate my conscience and moral code.

Re: college paid for by the government

After getting my AA at the community college (paid as I went) I transferred to UCO and about the same time bought a used truck at 10%. After getting the get yo free monies spiel. I realized I would be stupid not to get a 5% student loan to pay off the truck. Going into the financial aid office I was greeted by the sound of a crying 20 something year old girl sitting with her mother talking with the counselor. I heard the counselor tell the teared up young lady "I'm sorry we can't lend you any more money this semester, $20,000 is the limit."

$20,000 for 1 semester! I started laughing, all three looked at me and I just shook my head.

Re: college paid for by the government

Wanna hear some shit?

I worked full time for years while taking a partial load of classes (part time 6-9 credits/semester) because I couldn't afford any more classes both in terms of time and money. So one day I get laid off (best thing to ever happen) and guess what? Suddenly I qualify for Pell grants and some other engineering grants that I never knew existed. Well the Pell grants alone covered 100% of my tuition which I had been paying out of pocket for when I had a job (imagine how pissed I was). The difference equated to $3,000/yr which means I went to work each day for years to pay for school and only earned $3,000 more than I would have gotten if I had just taken a full load of classes and not worked at all! In essence the system punished me for have a job. <---Yep! How fucked up is that?

Re: college paid for by the government

I still occasionally attend a major university when time/money permit -

If you are a combat veteran or served during certain combat times you can get a 50% tuition voucher.

I took advantage of that, and still do.
I just finished a 1 year course on information Assurance since I've been DOING IA work for 10+ years...may as well get the 2 little certs and the CISSP certification - (I did).
