Anyone out there knowledgeable on Colt AR 15 variations?
I purchased a Colt Upper that is maked with a C and then an AF ....what is odd is this upper does not have a forward assist. Anyone know when these were made or what model issue would have had an upper without the forward assist???

Is there a square foundry mark on the top left side?
Geissele has a really good set of pictures on the site listed under uppers for sale.
If I remember, Colt didn't offer a receiver without the FA

Colt made the 601, 602, 603 and 604 upper in a non forward assist version. Be about 1967-1970 give or take with a chrome bolt/carrier without forward assist cuts.
I have a Colt 604 upper.

The GAU-5 can be found with or without. If it has field sights they are desirable but not unusual. The match sights variant with the case deflector and no FA is a collector item as they were made for the LMG and are not often in production.

There is a C mark and then an AF in stead of the square forged there.
I went back and looked, the only thing on their upper is the number "13629" and the Square forge mark.
Seeing you guys are talking about several different types of uppers does Colt's "C" mark stand true to all their uppers or just certain generations?

the latest uppers have the 13629. But previously they had a C with a variety of different symbols beside the C depending on the Forger.
I just had not seen one without a forward assist but I guess they did make them at one time.

I haven't looked recently, last time I looked they were about double what a stripped flat top upper was going for
I would rather have a forward assist on my build...Im just trying to figure out what price point to sell this one for.
The guy who sold me the Colt HRT upper that this particular receiver is on offered to trade me a new Colt receiver with the new 13629 markings and forward assist for this one back that has the C AF and no forward assist.....but im wondering if this one is worth more and Id be better off selling it and buying one with a forward assist.

When people refer to 'flattop' they are referring simply to anything that does not have a carry handle as one piece with the upper correct?
Used real deal carry handle uppers are going for crazy money.
I seen several last week going for $250 ea

I've known the dealer that was selling them and he said he can't get enough of the old MILSERP Colt stuff.

When I built my 604 repro people couldn't give stuff like triangle handguards away, now they are all the rage.
Yes flat top is generic no carry handle upper.
Having a forward assist makes no sense to me, if the round doesn't seat properly, do you really want to force it in? My 2 cents, spend accordingly

Well at times of intense firing and no chance to clean such as in battle, due to getting extremely dirty a gas impingement rifle may begin to fail to totally seat the round in the chamber even though it has plenty of energy to still eject and grab the next round..thus the ability to overcome this and seat the round fully.
If your gun is clean and the gun fails to seat the round then yes...i agree....dont try to seat it with a forward assist.
In my case shooting a shorter barrel and/or suppressed at times...a forward assist may be needed even the more in a situation as I described due to the chance of undergassing being higher.

I regularly shoot 1000 rounds suppresses or 3000 rounds unsuppressed without issues.
I would say if your rifle is built correctly for your length of barrel than that should be the case. Back to my main question for starting this thread....Im trying to figure out when this rare Colt upper receiver with no forward assist would have been made
