We lost Our 600 yard range earlier this year. I havnt been able to shoot f/tr this year and it sucks. There is another 200 yard range close by that has .22lr comps each month. These are benchrest 100 and 200 yard matches. I want to get a set up to shoot in these and was looking at a savage mark ii or cz 452. There are some pretty good shooters that compete at these, one bench rest hall of famer, and they mostly shoot Kimbers or Rem 40 x's. Will I be able to be competitive with the two guns I mentioned? I don't have the funds for a 2000 dollar rig with a s&b on top either, wish I did. What would y'all reccommend?

Re: Competition 22lr

Our local range has rimfire competitions monthly, varying from 25 yards to 200.

Our last match was dum dum lolipops at 25 and 50 yards, 3 of us went 20/20 and had a shoot off at pictures of flies at 50 yards. My Savage w/ Simmons scope and I ended up taking 3rd, only hitting 2/5 flies at 50. The other 2 rifles were a Suhl 150 and a Rem 40x, both with *very* expensive glass. Month before I took 3rd also, course of fire was golf balls at 75 and 100 yards. Winner was the guy with the Suhl and a young lady shooting a custom contender pistol. A few months before, I took first on bowling pins at 50 yards, shooting off hand - no supports allowed. And I took 4th last december on bowling pins at 200 yards.

So yes, you can be competitive with a Savage. Spend your savings on great glass and quality ammo. When the rifle becomes a limiting factor, then you can upgrade and keep using your great glass.

As to what rifle, ammo, etc. I'd get a Savage BTV or BV or TR, and the best glass you can afford. As to ammo choice, my Savage *really* likes various sub sonic HP offerings (the Winchester X22LRSUBA load is best) and CCI SV. Both group smaller than Wolf in my rifle.

I have an izhmash biathlon 7-2KO which I think are going for about $500 right now. It is probably the single best .22 you can buy that is ready to go for competitions out of the box, without spending more than a thousand on the rifle or the parts.

Re: Competition 22lr

Where can you get one? I have been semi-looking for one for about a year with no luck.

Pretty sure rimfirecentral will have a few for sale, they generally always do. I found mine on gunbroker after a few months searching, and there was recently a group buy for new ones that got imported from Russia(however they were the $1600 super-custom ones). It just takes time to find one that comes up for sale, they're semi-rare but there are generally 1 or 2 a month which go up for sale somewhere.

Re: Competition 22lr

You will be shooting against Kimbers and 40x's? Sorry to disapoint you, you aren't going to come close with a Savage of any flavor. I know I just hurt a few moomoos in here, but I am in a position to know the facts without emotional attachment to some brand.
Buy an Anschutz and you might actually beat them, if you can shoot and get some good ammo it is likely. The Russian guns including the Vostok may also give you a good run at a win on a budget.
I have seen a CZ do some great shooting but I still don't think it will shake out in a true equipment race. Sorry but I have shot BR and its all about the money. If you don't have money it is going to be impossible to win and ultimately this leads to disapointment. Not trying to be a wet blanket, just telling you how it is.
BR competition is anything BUT fun in my experience. Find something fun and your budget will likely be more suitable. They have F-Class 22 at Magnolia R&P club near Jackson. You may do a bit better at that with a limited budget.

The magnolia range is the one I am referring to. I probably will just get the Savage mark ii tr because the stock on it resembles my A3 on my F/tr rig. I'll save the extra money for some good Lapua or Eley ammnition and see what it likes best. A .22 at 200 yards should be good practice for my .308 shooting if we can ever find another range.

Re: Competition 22lr

I am good friends with Allen Gaskin and thought he said they were shooting F-Class and not BR. He is strictly an IHMSA shooter so it may be "they all look the same" situation. Good luck with whatever you do and tell Allen hey for me.

Re: Competition 22lr

You said you didnt want to spend 2000 on a set up so what is your budget with rifle, glass, and nessisary mods to make it competitive with BR style rifles?

If I were you I would get a CZ455V. DIP rail, Yo dave trigger kit, and a half way decent scope ... the Vortex 5-15HS is looking mighty decent these days. All in you would have around 1000 into your rifle .... will it shoot with the kimbers and 40x's ... no ... will it be competitive-ish? yes. shoot that for a few months and save for a lilja barrel and that should make it much more competitive.

Spend lots of time practicing and buy every kind of ammo you can get your hands on. find what the rifle likes the best and buy as much of that brand/type/lot as you can.

In the end its your money and you need to decide what your expectations are and if they are realistic within your budget. As stated BR rimfire can get pretty insane and some of these guys have more than a year worth of my rent invested in their rifles.
