Re: Competition Shooting: M&P9 vs Glock 17
I have both a S&W 9mm FS gun and a Glock 17 Gen 4.
M&P *vs. G17 Gen 4
1.) Better control of the firearm with small backstraps (for someone like the OPs wife, Glock std. grip will be larger dia.)
2.) More reliable for me, of the 3 I own, all have been good to go out of the box
Glock 17 Gen 4
1.) More aftermarket support for extended controls, etc.
2.) More accurate, in my experience, past 50 feet
3.) Easier to make minor PF with (generally) faster polygonal rifled barrels and a slightly longer one (by ~.24") so I pick up ~40-45 fps. with the same load, so I can shoot a slightly softer load and still make minor.
I was in the same situation, wanting to run 1 of these 2 pistols for IDPA. I'm still torn between the two. I shoot the Glock better, and like the Vanek classic trigger (with a Wolff reduced power striker spring over the Vanek one) I have better than the full Apex trigger kit + RAM (or the FSS trigger I have in another gun). The Glock shoots flatter for me as well.
However, I do not trust my Glock to function 100% even though I have it running somewhat acceptably, and I would never carry it for SD, therefore, I've gone back to the M&P for now. The only thing really lacking for me with the M&P is accuracy at distance, particularly since I'm left handed and like the fully ambi controls of the M&P.
