Ok guys I started a thread here to introduce myself and to run down the specs and details of a rifle I'm having built. This is a continuation on that but the subject this time is fluting.
Let me first catch you guys up on the specs-
•AI AX FDE Chassis
•Surgeon 1086R
•Krieger 10T, 5R, 1.250 straight cylinder barrel in .300WM to finish at 26"
•Jewell trigger
•NF BEAST
•SPUHR mount

I contacted Krieger and they said as long as nothing has been done to the barrel they'd flute it for me for 145.00. They said if they flute it themselves they would stand behind it if I had any problems with it. They also stated if someone else did the work they would NOT stand behind it. I've done quite a bit of research on fluting and if I do it, it would be purely for asthetics. I'm not trying to save a bunch of weight by having it fluted, purely cosmetic as I know this rig is going to weigh a ton no matter what. So here are my choices-

1.8 flutes with a 1/4" cutter
2.12 flutes with a 3/16" cutter

I'm not concerned about possible effects on harmonics, rigidity, etc. The OD of the barrel is 1.250" so I'm fairly certain even with flutes it'll be fine.
My question is two fold-
1. Should I have it fluted
2. How many 8 or 12?

Ill let this thread run a day or two, tally up everyone's opinions and make a decision based upon that data. Any advice and ESPECIALLY any pics of fluted barrels with similar specs (ie-8 or 12 flutes, 1/4 or 3/16" wide) would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks for reading,
John

Maybe I should ask.... Why do you want it fluted? For looks or to lighten the overall weight of the gun? EDIT: NEVERMIND --- I didn't see the purely for astetics in your original post.

Go 8 flutes...

I agree ammo and practice is always money and time well spent, but for this one I don't mind dropping the little bit extra to have it fluted. I'm not doing it for weight savings, I just happen to like the look of it. I tried not to cut any corners any where so why not have it fluted.
