I have a Marlin 981T and I am looking to convert it to either 17 mach 2 or 22 magnum. As far as the 22 mag I isnt that just a matter of reaming the chamber of the original?

No 22 rimfire and 22 mag have different bore and groove diameter specs. IMO best way out, sell what you have, buy what you want.

The bore on a 22WMR is 0.001" larger than 22LR so if you just reamed it up you would get a "tight bore" type barrel.
You can do this, although the revolvers that shoot both chambers generally use the barrel for a WMR and let the LR bullets have a looser fit. This isn't generally too big of an issue (unless you're shooting matches) because the 22 rimfire bullets have a hollow base that expands into the rifling.
What would you do about the length of the action though, since there's quite a difference in the cartridge length.
