What is the "correct" way to use a range rod to dial in a barrel? I was setting a barrel up for muzzle threading and dialed in the 4 jaw first, then moved the dial indicator to the tip of the range rod and dialed in the spider. However when I went back to check the 4 jaw, it was now showing more than .005 of run out. I had it down to .002 before. Is there a correct way to do it?

there is a lot of back and forth involved with dialing it in. you are not going to be done after one set of the 4 jaw and one set of the spider. adjusting the rod true in one spot will always affect the other spot because of the amount of barrel sticking out past the chuck. you just have to keep working it back and forth until you get it dialed in at two spots. sometimes this takes me 15 minutes, other times a few hours. i hope you are planning on dialing it in much better than .002" also.

Use two dial indicators, make your life easier.
Like 300 said sometimes you can do it in minuets and sometimes it will take you longer to dial in that barrel.

I do as you are doing. Barrel first, then range rod. Then go back and do it again.
Do get a second indicator, it is worth the expense.
You want to dial it in until it does not move, ideally, but 0.0005inch is acceptable.<grin>

I actually have 4 indicators. I bought a retired machinist's tool chest. What is better, the plunger type, or the hinge type? I have both.
