Hi guys, i know this could be a stupid question. I have a supressor that goes over the barrel. The supressor covers about 14cm of the barrel. The other day when i was done at the range, i noticed that when i removed the supressor, the barrel part that was covered by the supressor was still pretty hot, even thou the rest of the barrel and the supressor was cooled down. Now, when i have been shooting in the past, and wanted to let the barrel cool before shooting the next group, i have always just touched the barrel in the middel, and the supressor itself to determine if it was cool enough to keeep shooting, i never removed the supressor to feel the covered barrel part. Now, my question is, could i have done harm to the barrel shooting it when i thougt i was cooled off, but i in reality it was still hot at the part the supressor covered. Cause if i thougt all of the barrel was cooled down, and kept shooting til it was hot again, the part that was covered by the supressor mut have been very hot since it was hot to begin with compared to the cool barrel part that was not covered by the supressor. Gun still shoots about 1 moa groups, sometimes smaller, sometimes a little bigger. Can i count on that group size is determined by my abilities as a shooter, or should i count in that i may have a damaged barrel?

As i said, this is maybe a stupid question.

Best regards, Peter

If you're idea of hot is not being able to touch the barrel without burning yourself there is no chance of damage.

Heat damage doesn't happen till heat soak has it near glowing red.

With that said if you're no longer confident in the barrel replace it. You're piece of mind is well worth the investment, imo.

Thanks alot guys, i really appreciate that you take the time to answer what might be stupid newbie question. If there is no chance of actual damage, is there any chance that the barrel have suffered in a way that its not as accurate anymore that it otherwise would have been if i had checked the barrel part that was covered by the supressor every time ive cheked if the barrel had cooled enough, instead of just cheking the barrel part that was not covered by the supressor?

is it a brand new barrel or old? some people believe in a break in procedure. some dont. additionally, some like to clean after a range trip and then shoot a fowler; others like to shoot, and shoot, and shoot; only cleaning when accuracy starts to drop off.

play around with both philosophies. shoot, have fun. dont wory about the heat.

Thanks guys, i really appriciate all the answers :) Barrel is only 600 rounds old, i dont really do any break in procedure, i just cant see a diffrence. I have 2 Tikkas with the same barrel, one i did a brake in procedure, the other i dident. But maybe i just dont shoot good enough to notice ;) I only clean with copper remover and carbon cleaner when accuracy drops, but i do give the barrel gun oil after the range, rust is not uncommon in the danish climate. I do of course always run some dry patches throu the barrel so no oil is left before i shoot it again ;-)

Tikka factory barrels are hammer forged and very good. Just had a 223 Tikka barrel replaced as it was over 1 moa and
throwing flyers, it was at over 8500 rounds mostly launching Berger 80 VLDs.

Was fireforming some 300 Norma mag Improved earlier this year, needed to get 200 cases done for myself and gunsmith.
Barrel used was an old Win Mag barrel rechambered for 300 NM Imp for FF, no matter how fast I fired, I couldnt get the
external barrel temp over about 130 degrees celcius. That was with 80 grains of AR 2217 powder and some surplus
175 Sierras.
