OK guys, I have been varmint hunting for about 25 years here in South East Ohio. Most hunting through the years has been ground hogs, squirrel, coons and coyotes when they show them selves along with fox. I recently bought a fox pro and am having Mark at SAC build me a 20 inch rig on a Remington action and a 12 twist Lilja 223 just for coyote and fox hunting. Ground hogs are not that plentiful anymore and the coyotes are thick as theives here. So now time permits and i am on a mission, making up for lost time. I have a few questions and i am hoping you fellows chime in here on them. 1 is show me some of your varmint rigs you use and 2 is i would like to see some set ups for night time hunting. I am going to build something just for night time hunting next year. Also what do you find is most useful in a reticle for hunting these if they are moving. I am thinking of getting something that also has a reticle that can be lit up when i need it. I am reading and gathering up as much info as i can for hunting these and would like to see and hear from you guys on what you have. Thanks....DAN....

Currently I use a 22-250 with a 25" Bartlien #5 8 twist on a Stiller TAC30 in a Manners SL with a Leupold 4.5-14.
In the past I have used a 16" flat top AR with an EoTech when I was calling in tight cover.

In my opinion, an illuminated reticle is highly suggested. as soon as you have a low light coyote come in, and you cant find your cross hairs, you'll wish you had one.

I hate the glass, but it's still holding zero and the adjustments are accurate. Scope and gun shoot sub moa out to 400m
I'm saving cash as we speak and most likely gonna pick up something new before this years 'yote season.

both of the above have rails on the side to accept lights. after finding out that it's REALLY tough to not only confirm but to keep the crosshairs on our "jumpy" Pa. coyotes, when it comes to hunting them in woods or at night.....
nothing like a good shooting shotgun in tight quarters or running into the call at night type of shots.

yes the extra price of the dead coyote choke and ammo is worth it, excellent out to 75-85 yards.
on a regular 3-4 day hunt with multiple locations, i generally have the 3 "rigs" along with me and generally take out of the truck what the area calls for.
as far as at night goes, i really like the idea of the shotgun / red dot combo. whether you go with the red dot or scope as an optic, make sure it has at least 10/11 settings. the scope i have on the .22 magnum is too bright and really messes up the night vision, even worse than having no lighted reticle at all. i now put very used batteries in it to help dim it more, but i also run the risk of not lighting up at all (dead batteries).
whatever you go with, make sure it's easy to adjust positions with and is quiet in doing so. having it be lightweight is another "must" with all the other calls, blinds, decoys, etc. that you may be carrying, a lightweight rig helps.
i also carry a S&W .357 6" 686 with a red dot on it in case the bastards flank me at close range.

My go-to calling rig for the last 2 seasons is a tikka 204 varmint topped with a mark 4 4-14 illum, harris long, and the new addition this year is a gemtech sandstorm. I shoot primarily with shooting sticks, but use the bipod enough to keep carrying it.
I say keep the reticle simple and not too fine. The low light can really make it difficult to target the predators. I like the illum reticle, but honestly rarely use it.

We can only night hunt without artificial light. So I am limited to moon light and snow. It can work very well. I use the same rifle and use my binos to help pick them up a little farther out. I've done the shotgun thing and find that there are too many that make the circle downwind out of shotgun range. At night I also generally shoot free handed, because the sticks or bipod in the snow make too much noise. If I leave the bipod extended, I can quietly lower the legs to make a farther shot if needed.

The paint on those desert colored rifles make my eyes go fricken nuts. I couldn't look at them very long. Very different paint.

Okoyote...do you ever call out of buildings like that? with electronic calls and such.
We have done a lot of practice from those types of houses (in inclement weather) and with the FoxPro Prairie Blaster I think it would work well to call from. (might give it a whirl this season)

My newest coyote rifle is chambered in .17Predator. Allows nearly 200fps gain over the .17Remington. ZERO recoil and laser flat trajectory with a 30gr Kindler Gold running 4100 fps...
24" Lilja, 1:9" #3 contour on a Seven action with OD Cerakote on the metal and my Krylon sponge job on the AWR handle. Smith'ed by Greg Tannel with the full Gre'-tan massage job, bolt sleeved, pin bushed, etc.

For night hunting, I've liked my 25Wizzer AR-15 for putting the DRT smackdown on coyotes. The extra bore size helps anchor them right where they stood, making recovery easier in the dark. Just keep the light on that spot and got get 'em!
Although I liked it very much, I got a wild hair & sold the 25Wizzer upper & had DTECH build me a fast twist .223 Wizzer AR, for a goof. .220Swift AR-15, if you will. 65gr Gamekings from a 22" tube...
That'll pull night detail once deer seasons are over here in NY...

c bass16, How's the hunting back there in Brookville? Was born in Flandreau and raised in Brookings. Graduated in '92. Just curious if your from there. Still have some hunting buddies back there. About the only thing I miss back there is the pheasants, ice fishing, and good friends and family. Happy hunting. CD

Alot of nice stuff posted here. I think next year i am going to work on building an AR for cotote and fox hunting for night time. I see that some of you have cans on them and i like that. I am going to have to look into the laws here where i live and see if i will be able to hunt with 1. I hope so because i have a lot of places rounded up to hunt these, some small tracks and some very large and it would be nice to keep the noise down at night.

Here is mine. Don't do much night hunting in my area due to regs. .223 Remington VSSF with a Leupold 6.5 x 20 Long Range Target Scope. The rifle is a bit heavy for packing but plenty accurate for an out of the box rifle. I love it.

Well, my Rifle A.D.D kicks in on the occasion....
But this year my contest rifle is this 243AI 1/8 twist Douglas tube.Built by IB&T Customs.It's in a different A4,with a CDI DBM but you get the idea.
Heres a 204 i used in years past.
This year i'm running another IB&T Custom 223AI for a fur rifle.I'll post a pic when it's done.

Leupold Mk4 4.5-14x50 Mildot
.308's dont tear them up as bad as one would think.
The yote in the pic was taken from 312yrds,bullet entered the mouth
and exited at the withers.I found the copper jacket of the 165gr BTSP Hornady layin just under the hide.

hey CD, just stopped by to see how this thread progressed and saw your quote. I'm not from Brookings but went to school at DSU for a few years and now am at SDSU. Had Nathan Clary in Flandreu (Clary Custom Comps) do my thread work for my suppressor but thats the only time I've been there. I'm a big time bird hunter but usually only till 'yotes get prime and deer season opens up. I really like using the 75's...they have been nice .4 moa shooters for me but with my 1:9 twist i wish i could get a heavier load to work as well for deer but so far, no luck.
