Hunting & Fishing Coyote hunting with dogs

Re: Coyote hunting with dogs

Love the use of dogs and hunting. It is very neat to watch good dogs work. Coyote hunting as a kid was a bit different with dogs, but dogs working never the less.

I haven't called coyotes this way, but know several who have. They absolutely love it and using dogs as decoy's is very effective.

I choose to use the terrain and trip the coyote up.

As a kid, in another state, folks ran coyotes with dogs. 5 dogs running and one kill dog. 5 dogs run and circle (if all goes well), let the kill dog out and be ready to see something that is absolutely amazing. You may say I am sick, etc, but whatever. I haven't seen it for years and at 6 to 10 yrs old, it is something that never leaves you. At that age, I was amazed at the dedication of those dogs. They knew there job and done it well.

Re: Coyote hunting with dogs

That's cool- I'll have to read up on this.

We've tried baiting with a dead rabbit, and a goat staked to the ground. The rabbit disappeared, and the goat lived through the night. Neither worked out very well!

Re: Coyote hunting with dogs

notice guys that the ground is not covered in snow, it's taking place more than likely during denning season when the pelts are not prime. Using a dog during prime pelts does not work as well as most would have to believe.

If you have a dog, don't try this, those dogs are trained for what they do. Not all dogs have the capacity to do this same job. Dogs that don't know what's going on, will die. Just a warning for those guys who want to take fluffy out calling.

yup.... even good trained ones die.

Re: Coyote hunting with dogs

Guys have been doing this for as long as I can remember. With a properly trained dog you can really lay them down. As far as pelts, most ranchers I know could care less about the pelt, they hang them on the fence and leave them. A good yote is a dead one.

Re: Coyote hunting with dogs

I got a cur pup back in August & he decoyed his 1st Coyote in October. Didn't know it at the time, but he did!

I'm hoping he turns out, but he fired right up on that coyote, even at 3mos!

He's sharp as a tack & gritty as heck! We're having ALOT of fun together and still have a loooong way to go...

As an added bonus, the little potlicker even trees coons & likes to chew on them too...

xdean: GREAT ADVICE.
I thoroughly concur and am taking every precaution to keep my pup in one piece & not have him ransacked on stand. That would wreck him for life & surely don't want that to happen!
My pup comes from a long line of hunting dogs, so I'm hoping he's "got it" in him & so far it looks like he might!

Re: Coyote hunting with dogs

That is a very nice dog. Hope he meets your expectations, but it seems that he has the hunting instincts running through his veins so you should not have a problem.

I was wondering the same thing. It seems as if the dogs pretty much set up the shots. They lure in the coyotes then run away from the line of fire. I guess it just goes to prove that with proper training and responsible owners dogs can do just about anything you need them too.

Re: Coyote hunting with dogs

Mountain Curs,
Gotta LOVE 'em. Got a couple of pups from a friend of mine at work; Mnt. Cur/ Rhodesian Ridgeback cross and they turned out to be furry missles. Great team hunters. Lost my buddy male, Wilson, got out to the road and did'nt look both ways. Miss that guy...

Re: Coyote hunting with dogs

Excellent photos, S-Man!
I'm hoping to realize that same success with my pup. Got him from out your way, so I wouldn't doubt if my pup & those dogs you hunted with are somehow related...
In any event, it's gonna be fun to see how these big eastern coyotes react to a dog on stand...

good huntin'!

Re: Coyote hunting with dogs

Re: Coyote hunting with dogs

Motodog,
haha, that's like compairing a heavy weight boxer to Jet Lee. Now the Mt Cur would be like compairing Bruce Lee with Jet Lee. The verocity and will keep mt curs going to please. my neighbor has a 85 lb boxer/pit mix male and I went over to talk to him one day and Pete came with me. His dog started to dominate my male, with chest bumps and pushing. Pete took it for about 3 minutes, then unleashed the furry of hell on him. That 85lb dog lasted about 15 seconds and he was on his back with blood running out of his mouth and head. Pete's only 43lbs. I'm not advicating dog fighting, but i don't bring him over to the neighbors any more either. Curs are crazy fast and protective. The only blood that Pete had on him was the neighbors dogs.

Re: Coyote hunting with dogs

You ought to see my 50 pound Airedale.....laffin! He knows his way around coyotes pretty well. I've used Airedale's for coyote hunting for the past 20 years.

Re: Coyote hunting with dogs

Got to love gettin yotes using a dog. My cur is 5 years old and is a good yote dog. I've had her leed yotes in before I was even set up, shot one at 12 steps one morning a couple years ago.

Re: Coyote hunting with dogs

I use a blackmouth curr started him when he was a pup just wound coyotes for him and let him go fight them. it does not take long to get a dog started its easier than training a bird dog for shure. not all coyotes will come to the dog some will run off but febuary when they are breading and very agressive, iv called and shot 6 coyotes on one stand and all hunting is more fun for me watching a good dog work. u will never want to go back to hunting without one
