(Reuters) - Gilbert Baker, a San Francisco-based activist and artist best known for creating the rainbow flag representing gay rights, has died at the age of 65, his longtime friend announced on social media on Friday.

"My dearest friend in the world is gone. Clive Baker gave the world the rainbow flag, he gave me forty years of love and friendship," Cleve Jones said on Twitter.

No details were immediately available on the cause of Baker's death or where he died. According to the biography posted on his official website, he had been living in New York City.

Jones also tweeted a photo of Baker with former President Barack Obama, inviting mourners to meet him under a rainbow flag in the Castro district of San Francisco on Friday evening to remember his friend.

Baker, who was born in Kansas in 1951, was stationed in San Francisco in the early 1970s while serving in the U.S. Army, at the start of the gay rights movement.

According to the website biography Baker began making banners for gay rights and anti-war protests, often at the request of Harvey Milk, who would become the first openly gay man elected to public office in California when he won the 1977 race for a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Milk rode under the first rainbow flags made by Baker at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade in June 1978, just months before the politician was murdered by a former city supervisor, the biography says.

We are all for free speech and expression when it is our own, not so much when it is others. Not only did Gilbert advocate for what he believed in but he created a symbol of their movement, good for him.

Long live free speech, whether it is mine or not!

If someone above was advocating for the removal of his free speech I missed it.
More so the humor in the flamboyant lifestyle.
Humor can be found in most things if we don't take ourselves to seriously.

That was my thought. Its his right to be flamboyant, its my right to laugh at him. Long live freedom.

My comment was aimed at those who are thinking that this guy should have never existed or had a voice and I know more than a few that read this felt that way, maybe (definitely) I should have clarified that my comment wasn't aimed at any of the previous comments. I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of overt homophobia in the above comments. Now back to our regularly scheduled snarkery and shenanigans.

You're so damn diverse.. Or should we say "deep"?

So, is your assertion that the gay rights movement is about free speech? Because if it is, they already have that right. Someone using their sexually as an, "I am special and oppressed shield'" to get what they really want does not impress me. His protest had nothing to do with gay rights, it was anti America Socialist crap. He just found a group he could convince they were oppressed. I am sure at some point he was convicted by his own stupidity. So, should I be proud that he spent his life as group, trying to tear down the thing that protected his right to free speech? I would say ,"fuck him if he is too beetle headed to make the connections.

Quick... we need to send them some rainbow flags and stop the genocide....

Maybe we should shine rainbow-colored lights on a building somewhere or all change our Avatar's to have rainbows on them.

This cannot be allowed to stand!!! While we're at it... let's stop that Kony guy and his chain of African daycare franchises...

    Cheers,

    Sirhr

    Trump will be blamed.

Kadyrov is a killer. Time will tell if he is killing for his own power or just to keep the lid on the Islam thing long enough to where he can break it out big time and bring his special blend of Chechnya death far and wide. If Chechnya became glass tomorrow the world would likely be a better place.

My assertion is not that they are about free speech rather they used their free speech.
