Anybody had experience with short barrel (less than 24") Creedmoor rifles.

Most custom shops seem to use 24" but a few builders like McMillan give the option of 20".

Looking for stats, experience and/or opinions.
(Creedmoor only pls... I think your .260s, Sweeds, .308s and God know what are awesome too but i need Creedmoor info

)

I hunt mostly in the southeast so shots less than 200yrds from a confined space is the norm, however I don't want to limit myself if the opportunity presents itself.

Plus, I have a range close by that reaches out 650yrds so why not be able to have some real fun.

Cheers.

Re: Creedmoor Short Barrel Opinions

I don't think you lose much. The differences in individual barrels will show velocity variances more than a few inches to a point. My 21" Bartlein gets 2730 with the factory 140 A-maxs. Beats the heck out of a 308 with less recoil. I've read some of the other threads with load data for the 6.5 CM/.260 and you aren't giving up much going from 28" to 21". It seems to average about 100 fps.

Also, Creedmoor and 260 are so similar that anything that applies to the 260 will also apply to the Creedmoor. I suggest going to the reloading section and look up load data for both cartridges. Some people are nice enough to include barrel length.

Re: Creedmoor Short Barrel Opinions

Shorter barrel = less velocity; nothing else will be effected. If shooting out to 650y is the furthest you plan on going you could go down to 16" and still get there with no issues.

A 140 amax going 2500fps will still make it out to 1k supersonic.

Re: Creedmoor Short Barrel Opinions

Thanks for the help fellas.

BTW... I would love to be able to reach far past 1000yrds but I'm lacking a place to give it a shot.

Also, the gun would be set up tac style but used for hunting game as big as elk.
The tac options (night vision & suppressor) are for the hogs in TX!

Nice! Thanks.

I use factory too... sorry but reloading ain't my thing.
I know it makes a big difference but my patience and attention span don't play well with each other.

Re: Creedmoor Short Barrel Opinions

My 21" Rock Creek barrel Creedmoor is seeing 2820 with the 130 VLD's.

So far I like mine better then the .308, ballistics are way better even with a shorter barrel. Keep in mind I'm moving from a short .308 to a short-moderate length 6.5 Creedmoor, so ballistics improved for me a great deal.

Re: Creedmoor Short Barrel Opinions

Im in the same boat you are brother. Live in Texas and hunt in brushy areas or deer stands so its tough to maneuver a 26" barreled gun. I just ordered all my parts for my build with a 26" barrel. Im going to get it going and shooting first to get a good baseline then ill be chopping the barrel to atleast 22" if not to 20".

Your goals sound exactly the same as mine in what kind of shooting and scenarios we hope to be in.
