I picked up some hornady 75 gr bullets with cannulure,,,they were on sale, I would prefer no cannulure As I don’t plan on crimping I prefer precision type ammo which is why I like the hpbt style heavier gr bullets. Do the bullets with cannulures shoot as well as th e same bullet without? Hornady 75 gr match factory ammo has shot VERY well out of my match barrel, like 3/4” or better. Hoping to duplicate. I have never had to reload for 223 before now.
Today Hornady shows the same BC for the bullets, couple yrs ago, cannelure bullet was substantially less. I don't have both, but the reg bullet was fairly longer.
There are really 2 camps concerning crimps, do or not. Past info was crimp to ensure the bullet doesn't get pushed into the case from recoil of gun or while feeding(AR platform). That train of thought is fading, but it may pay to run more neck tension than usual. Unless you are folding case mouths into the cannelure, no matter which crimp you use, taper or roll, now brass has to be exact lengths for it to be effective accuracy wise.
I myself have always liked a light taper crimp on my AR ammo, it has worked for me. My reasoning is I buy once fired military brass and don't really want to put too much effort into it.
I also have friends on both sides here. One group likes a heavy crimp, their reasoning being the charges are dropped by hand thrown measures, or progressive presses. They feel they can compensate for the slight inaccuracy of that system by bumping up start pressures to a more uniform level with the crimp. It works for them.
Also guys that say screw it, no crimp, and it works well also.
Best if tried both ways, experiment some, you will find a system that works for you, and when you do, trust me, it wont be the only way to get the job done, but it works for you.
