Somebody posted the Midway USA link that had these on clearance for $499. Looked too good to pass up for a Japanese built scope...love my LOW built Cronus's.....Croni (plural)....which I have 2. Hopefully JOL would make an equally impressive scope.
Took my Cronus BTR 4.5-29x in Geissele 20 moa Cantilever mount off my JP .223 precision rifle and mounted the CT in a JP Cantilever flat mount. The Cronus/Geissele will be going on a .224 V Craddock upper that I'm on a waiting list for.
Initial impressions.....glass looks nice. Kinda tight eyebox on 25x, really like the floating dot. Have the floating + on Croni. Elevation knob spins kinda easily....not a problem as I'm not hunting with it. It has a Rev Limiter, not a zero stop....get a little over 2 full turns before run out of elevation. Focus knob works as should, illumination is daylight bright but not sure I would ever use it.
Took to the range last week to zero....at 100 yard zero and with the flat JP mount.....I was near the end of first revolution on elevation knob. According to my Strelok chart shooting super accurate Copper Creek 77gr Berger...that would get me to 850 yards....which would be fine as the 1000 yard range I went to was forced to close. Rarely get past 300 yards now. Anyways, that should have been fine, but just didn't sit right with me.....in case I need that extra range for the boog or something similar. I know how to use holds, so slow your roll all you wanna be snipers....btdt.
Looked around for a nice cantilever mount that would not break the bank. JP and Geissele were not to be had...so decided to try a Griffin Armament SPRM2....15moa unimount. It looked like a quality mount. The under-mounted screws are a bit of a pain, but not a deal breaker. I guess these guys are jumped on because of the name....but that seems a little overboard and kinda juvenile...but whatever. Scope mounted up fine. I used the Arisaka leveling tool...or feeler gages and it literally takes minutes. Never again will I mess with a bubble level and plumb line.
15 moa = 4.44 mils so backed up my elevation knob 4.5 and see if the math works out, as well as the swapping mounts. In theory, it should be on paper at least, but we'll see.
That 1st range day.....shot some nice groups, only at 100. Was working on perhaps the best group ever out of the JP....just before fired 4th round....a guy 2 benches over cracked off a round and felt myself pull it....dammit!!
All in all, I like the Cronus BTR Gen1 better, but this scope was a steal at $499. Tracking and tall target test sometime in the future.
Favorite CT feature, floating dot.
Least Favorite, tight eyebox.
Some pics.
