Im going to be building a 308AR and would like some feedback on the parts I've chosen. This gun will be for shooting at the range, hunting, and double as a battle rifle for SHTF scenario. I want to build something along the lines of the DPMS SASS but I would rather put it together myself than buy a complete rifle. I feel that this would give me the best understanding/knowledge of how my rifle operates. Here's the list I've put together...feel free to rip it apart if there are parts on there that I should avoid and please suggest any replacements if there's some better value for any of these parts. I realize the scope I have picked is really pretty cheap but I read some positive reviews about its quality for the price. The optics I would really like are just way outside my budget so something in that range will have to do till I have the funds to get the glass I want.

Re: Critique My SASS Build List

Swap the trigger for the Geissele SSE. The lighter trigger pull will be better for an SASS.

Swap the brake for the PWS PRC as it has very little ground signature and still has excellent recoil reduction like the FSC30.

Swap the Harris for an Atlas V8.

Re: Critique My SASS Build List

Decent set of parts you've chosen but wtf is up with the scope choice? 300 bucks gets you a weaver 3-10 mil/mil. I'd go that route if you don't want to drop some bucks on glass right away.

Thanks for the pointer on a better optic choice. I'm completely new to any type of precision shooting....that's why I joined here and posted this. I had just come across a couple pretty good reviews of that scope for a cheap price. I'm actually thinking of just using irons till I can spend some coin on a good nightforce. But I'll look into the weaver.

Thanks for all the opinions so far guys. Keep em coming.

Re: Critique My SASS Build List

Don't forget to budget some kind of mount/rings for your scope.
I have a Larue QD mount on my SASS and kinda wish I had the 20MOA Aadmount as the QD feature of my Larue is pointless for me and I'd really like to have the 20MOA cant (my Larue has 0MOA cant).

I would take the advice given on a buying a different scope. I'm very much like you and live on a budget, so the high end scopes are out of my reach. I'd think the Weaver or perhaps a lower end Bushnell or Vortex would be a much better choice.

I shoot with a guy who has two Osprey scopes I have shot his guns with them. I am a novice and I could instantly tell that they are complete junk. I mean, they function okay, but I kept trying to see if there was a smudge on the lenses because the glass was so poor. I personally don't think you would be happy with one in the long run.....and they will be just about impossible to sell when you get ready to.

Other than the scope mount and scope, it sounds like a nice build to me.

Good luck with it.

Re: Critique My SASS Build List

Thanks for all the info guys! I'm brand new here but this site is awesome! I'll do some research and pricing on all the parts suggested and make some changes to the list.

I'm just waiting for some cash to come in but once it does I'll get started on ordering parts and watching the for sale section on a couple forums looking for deals on specific parts. I can't wait to get this thing together and start shooting it!

Re: Critique My SASS Build List

Unless you're shooting beyond at extreme distances (1500yds+), there's really no need for a 10 or 20 moa mount because the NightForce NXS has 100 moa of elevation. That will get you to 1000yds with plenty of elevation to spare.

If you choose to go with a QD mount, do your research. There are many on here who will tell you to consider something other than the Larue QD mounts because they have been known to wear out; meaning, they work loose and eventually become junk from being removed and reattached.
