Gunsmithing crooked recoil lug.....

Hey everyone i have got a savage 10fp w/accu-trigger.i got to looking atsome pics of it yesterday..I noticed that it looked crooked in the stock.(canted to the left).At first i just thought it was my bipod since my bipod is aswiveling model.But it isnt the bipod.Next i removed the action from the stock to see if there was something in the recoil lug slot......there wasnt.After scratching my head for a couple minutes i looked down the barreled action and it looks to me like the the recoil lug has turned to one side just a tiny bit.
I dont know if this has been like this since i purchased the rifle or has this happened from the 500 and some rounds i have sent downrange.(can a recoil lug do this?).
My question is how do i remedy this I do have a savage barrel lug wrench.If i loosen the barrel nut and get the lug centered again do i have to headspace again?If so i need to get a 308 headspace gauge..Also if the lug wasnt crooked from the factory what caused it to get that way and could this be a reacurring problem?
Oh yeah the action is in a b&c medalist stock.....

The savage lugs have a detent in them to prevent shifting while installing a barrel, the barrel nut would have to be obviously loose for it to turn you would be able to see a gap. I don't know how much play there is in the detent, but definately not enough for the lug to shift and contact the bottom of a properly inletted stock. I might try to take some material out of the bottom of the recoil lug recess in the stock first

You might check to make sure nothing is touching wrong on the trigger or the magazine box area. I have seen the mag box force a barrel to the side of a barrel channel too. Since you already have it all apart, it is easy to check stuff. What kind of bottom metal if any does it have? Is there enough clearance around the trigger?

Allright dd thanks i will try that.Maybe its the way im looking at it.Im proably the one thats crooked....lol.When i get home wednesday sounds like i have a small project..

Actually it's not uncommon for the B&C stocks to look a little uncentered in the barrel channel. If you bed the barreled action into the stock following LAPrecisions bedding posts it'll probably straighten it up in the barrel channel. Or you can get a barrel sized dowel wrapped with sand paper and hog out the barrel channe; a bit to even it up.

To answer your question there is not way 500, 5,000 or 50,000 rounds down the tube can offset the recoil lug if the rifle has been put together properly. The barrel would have to be loose and with the detent in the Savage recoil lug it'd have to be really loose.
