Looking to get into some .22 shoots locally. Curious, if there’s a reason why I shouldn’t go with a Curtis valor and .22 bolt? I like the option of being able to switch calibers, especially when I’m hunting in winter but could go with a dedicated voodoo/rimx ect if that’s a better move

I like switch barrel rifles but the .22 rimfire is where I would draw the line and get a dedicated .22 rifle. Just too much with feeding and fitment moving to .22 with a centerfire receiver. For me at least. If you can afford the Vudoo then jump on it and get shooting some matches.

I hate being the +1, but +1 to what @Rob01 said. I was tempted by the setup originally but after reading up on it more and hearing all the struggles people have gone through to get proper fitting barrels and consistent performance with them, I decided to go the Vudoo route. Very happy with my setup but I know plenty of people just as happy with RimX and B14R...or at least they think they are ;)

There is a thread here of people who's gotten the Curtis conversion to work well for them. Worth a look if you're still considering it:

I don’t think I like your guys answers :ROFLMAO:

Telling me exactly what I thought but didn’t want to hear
I have done a lil over 70 barrels for the scout actions and a few conversions(one being for a very currently high profile figure)and they can shoot extremely well. Sometimes everything works as designed sometimes you HAVE to make it work massaging a little here and there. The switch barrel idea is sound for a plinker but as stated above if you want to shoot NRL/PRS you will want to build a dedicated rifle.

I guess my thought is it would be dedicated but I just like the option to switch out if I ever tried a centerfire prs match. Unlikely but something appealing about the option to be able to

Top-shelf precision rimfire bolt guns are a persnickety lot to get running reliably, even when dealing with a dedicated-caliber rifle. The issue is trying to feed a tiny cylindrical cartridge into a tiny chamber without shearing or denting the soft bullet. Even minuscule tolerance variations are likely to cause feeding problems.

Eaxample: I got my first-gen Vudoo almost five years ago, set up by Vudoo in an MDT BA Comp chassis. I quickly found that the rifle often failed to feed the last round in a magazine. Long story short, with prompt help from Vudoo, I discovered that the 1/8" or so vertical play I was seeing in magazine fitment was the root cause. After communication with Vudoo, MPA sent me an adjustable mag latch, which was just being released into the wild. That corrected my problem. Happily, that rifle now feeds near-100% reliably with my 10-round polymer and [discontinued] 15-round aluminum magazines.

I know guys who simply gave up trying to get Vudoo and Rim-X rifles to feed reliably; Vudoo guys went to Rim-X and Rim-X guy went to Vudoo.

Point is, to repeat: getting the best .22LR repeaters to run right is challenge enough. Trying to make it work in a switch-barrel rig - with switch to a relatively huge centerfire cartridge? Um, no thank you; I wouldn't stick any part of my anatomy in that wringer.

Not to mention... Four years ago, I thought the idea of a switch-barrel setup was great - use the same optic and chassis for multiple calibers. So I built one, with two bolts (.223 and .308 size).

What I found was I hated pulling the action out of the chassis (MDT ACC - long fore end), switching the barrels, and resetting the scope. Yes, the scope zero settings were fairly consistent for each barrel/caliber. "Fairly" isn't good enough for me. I just find that I don't want to swap barrels around that much. I want to pull a rifle or two out of the safe and go shoot them.

My $.02. Buy a Vudoo or Rim-X and be done.

Unless you have lots of $$$ to burn on toys, get a Bergara or CZ457 and shoot a couple dozen matches. You will educate yourself about what matters and make more informed decisions about whether or not a custom does anything you actually need/can use effectively. Until you are top 10 in regional matches, the customs don’t make you finish better. The shooter is the weak point.

I know it’s 100% the Indian and not the arrow. But I’m in more of that but once cry once mindset and would rather spend the money up front then spend it twice if I do

I totally respect that and did the same thing when I went for a Vudoo. However, if you don't "want" to spend quite as much on another setup, you can have very similar if not the same performance results from a less expensive rig. That being said, it really depends on the feel and features you want out of your rimfire setup. I wanted something I could have a near 1 for 1 replica of a centerfire rig to keep things consistent.

I have recently built a CZ 457 with my brother though that (at this point) feels damn near as good and cost half as much. I still prefer my Vudoo, but it is worth noting if that's something you care about at all.

Thanks and I appreciate the info, a lot of good points to think about. Nice looking rigs also, I’m a big fan of manners

For what its worth I went the conversion kit route and swapped back and forth quite a bit on my valor actions. As mentioned above it can take a little tuning to get the rimfire side running right. Biggest thing there would be an adjustable mag latch at a minimum and the newer adjustable magazines on the market like the L3i have made a big difference for me there with feeding consistency.

To me its worth exploring if there is a benefit to you and you wont shoot much centerfire. You could save some significant money on an extra chassis, scope, mount, and action. On the flip side you will always have it in the wrong configuration when you need it, haha ask me how I know and why I have 2 actions now.

Good to know. I ended up not listening to most people in here and got an axiom on their Black Friday sale 😬. I did get a couple of the l3i adjustable mags also, and snagged a manners TCS from the classifieds to drop it in. It’s currently with @David Lott getting that premium barrel but I can’t wait to shoot it

Sounds like a sweet setup I'm sure you'll be happy. Good moves all around.

I bought the Chris action and rimfire conversion black Friday deal a couple of years ago , picked up a muller fast twist barrel , dropped it off with David Lott , I wasn’t planning on having a swap barrel rifle but the option to turn it into a CF is there
Oh ,,,,,,,, btw ,,,,,,it’s a hammer
