Custom Handguards?

Anyone know of anyone who makes a custom handguard for a Daniel Defense DD5 v5? I don't need all that rail, and I'd like to lighten the rifle up a little with maybe a different material.

Wouldn't a shorter handguard expose the gas block and tube?

To your question I'm not aware of any as it's a proprietary set up but even if you went from a 15" handguard to a 10" handguard the weight savings would be like 3 oz.

I don't want a shorter handguard, I just want a handguard without the rail. That rail is solid metal. I think if you could eliminate that whole rail, it would make the rifle a bit lighter, paired with a carbon fiber barrel. I don't even know why they do that, or why the community wants it. You have mlok all over the damn thing... Just put a small section of rail wherever you want to attach something, and save the weight otherwise, geesh! I guess I'll just have to make my own out of aluminum, or something.

Machining the rail won't cut that much weight down but if you really want to, just have any machinist machine your rail off. I don't see the point. That's not where guns lose their weight. If you want weight loss, buy a Knight's URX rail and enjoy a top tier super rigid rail that was made to do just that; the handguard is the barrel nut.

FYI Carbon fiber barrels weigh more than lightweight steel barrels. A carbon barrel is a steel barrel with carbon wrapping. Relative to the same contour they're lighter, but the lightest weight barrels are always steel.

They are aluminum and pretty lightweight.

You aren't saving much weight. Like I said, cutting 5" off the entire thing is only 3oz.

This 15" dd mfr xl only weighs 10 oz

This 9" dd mfr xl is 6oz

Lobbing off the picatinny part would save you maybe 2-3 oz.

YHM makes an all round HG with no rail. Not sure it will work with your lower receiver, but worth looking into. I’ve seen others without rails but don’t recall the make.

If you want lightweight, then Smoke Composites makes carbon fiber furniture. It's not cheap though.
