I recently got a Winchester 52B in trade, it doesn't have any collectors value to it but it is in very good condition. I was wondering what you guys thought about chopping the barrel down. I would like to cut it down to 20-18 inches.

Does the barrel have extra holes in it? If not I would leave it alone. If the barrel has extra holes I would slug the bore and cut it down where the bore is the tightest to make it shoot better.

I think that scope mount uses the factory holes for target scope blocks, your barrel probably doesn't have any extra holes.

It looks correct, why do you think it has no collecter value? The holes in the barrel are for the old externl adjustment target scopes. The holes on the left side of the reciever are for the rear sight. Leave it as is and cut a CZ or other modern rifle.

I love those old guns, why don't you just sell it to me and buy a rifle that more closely fits what your looking for.

You want to sell it instead of cut it down, PM me with price.

I love these oldies as well, and I hate seeing people chop them up. So my vote goes to either replacing the original barrel with a new one or replacing the entire rifle with something currently in production. That being said, it's obviously still your rifle and ultimately your decision.

His gun has an after market barrel on it. Other wise i agree with you. Dont chop an original 52b

    Adam,

I bought a 52B a few months ago. I was sorely tempted to turn it into a modern trainer. If mine didn't have collectors value I'd definitely have it built up like I want. I've owned some very nice 22's in my life but I think the 52's are just built better. The old saying is true-They don't make em like that anymore. Since it doesn't have the original barrel get it all tacticooled and post the pics.

I stand corrected, my apologies; I know next to nothing about 52's.

Re: Cut down a Win 52 barrel or not?

I cut down the barrels on two 40x's to 22" and 23" respectivley. Both handle much better for my uses.

I have an article around here about a gunwriter who took a midweight 52 and cut barrel to 22", added a sporter stock, and turned it into his favorite squirrel rifle and a hammer to boot.

Having said that, its a personal decision.

Re: Cut down a Win 52 barrel or not?

    My opinion is no cut.
I had one similar given to me by a customer. I shot it didn't like it and sold it for just under 500$
Then bought a new savage mark II which better suits my needs.

I'd check with the guys over at Rimfire Central. If your 52 has a Johnson barrel the barrel should be marked. There are collectors who want the perfect 99.9% original but there are also guys who seek rifles modified by specific smiths, stockmakers, barrel makers, etc.

If your looking for a trainer the 52 reissues are great rifles and have been escalating in value. Terrific shooters and it would be hard to lose on one unless you kicked the crap out of it.
