cutting a barrel?

i have a savage mkll in .22 and have done some custom work on it already. ive cut the stock to form a pistol grip and molded it with bondo. make a custom skeleton stock so it would meet fed. regulations. cut the fore end off of the stock so that its about 6 inches infront of the mag. now im looking to cut the barrel. i want to know if accuracy will be affected. im looking to take it to 16 or 18 inches maybe. i only shoot subs out of it so velocity isnt that important. i also need to know what i should do besides cut it straight, file and debur the inside of the barrel.

Re: cutting a barrel?

I'm convinced after becoming involved with rimfire bench rest that prior to cutting off any barrel you must "slug" carefully to find the sweet(choke)spot because if it is missed you will affect accuracy. That said, I have a CZ factory 16" threaded that is extremely accurate with Rem subsonic. I love the 16" CZ as it is very handy, and not to long with the suppressor on. Regards

Re: cutting a barrel?

I am not one that cuts barrels unless I am trying to compensate for wear, as in moving the chamber forward to cut out some throat wear or moving the muzzle back due to imperfections in the crown. To my way of thinking, up to a point, the longer the better. I don't know what you have in mind as to why you want it shorter nor what your skills with the tooling you have but I do know you can't hacksaw off a barrel, touch it up a bit with a mill bastard file and crown it with a rattail file and smooth it off with some emery cloth and expect to get an accurate rifle. The crown is very important to the accuracy of any barrel. With that said, unless you are very skilled, I think you should do as I do which is take it to a competent gunsmith and have him do the work. Regards, FM

agreed.

but if you do get up the courage to do it, put a bit of a crown on it to get rid of the burrs and such...

This isn't for the weak at heart and any gunsmith reading this would probably be cringing about now, but I took a chamfer tool used for reloading, and tried as evenly as I could to uniformly trim the end of the muzzle. it did seem to make a bit of difference on my mkii heavy barrel, so i did it on my mkii f.

...after. It's hard to notice in the photo, but there is a silver ring around the end of the lands and grooves where the metal was removed.

Sounds insane, but it did seem to work, and if you do decide to cut doen the barrel yourself, you may want to do something like that to clean up the muzzle.

but you really should have a knowledgable gunsmith do it.

Re: cutting a barrel?

I would say if you don't mind trying, go for it. Figure out what length you want the barrel. Cut it an inch longer than that in case you mess up. You can buy the tools to recrown online for about what it would cost to have it cut by a smith. Some of the guys on rimfirecentral have used a brass screw chucked in a drill with lapping compound on it to recrown or repair a crown. I'm not saying that is the correct way, but it seems to work for them sometime. If you mess up, you can always take it to a smith and have it repaired.
In the end, if you don't mind asking a gunsmith to fix a mistake you made, I don't see that you have anything to lose but time and a little cash by trying it yourself first. It may work out great for you.

Re: cutting a barrel?

I was reading somewhere about a school that will cut .308 barrels down to 20" or so with just a hacksaw and crowning tool, and have had good results. They made it sound like barrel length and crowing aren't rocket science.

That being said, I sure as hell wouldn't DIY my trg down to 20".

I'm not advocating this method, but some may find this interesting/entertaining....

Re: cutting a barrel?

i did it yesterday. i decided to cut it to 17.5 from the bolt head. so that there should be about 1 revolution before the bullet leaves. i put electrical tape around where i wanted to cut so i had a straight line. then i pulled out the angle grinder and went to work. cutting a little at a time so the barrel didnt get to hot. took a sanding block and smoothed the end and rounded the sides a bit. then took a file and deburred it. actually accuracy isnt to bad. at 30 yards i put 2 bullets in the same hole while zeroing. then at 80 or so yards i put 2 bullets within an inch using a 4x scope so im pretty happy

Re: cutting a barrel?

I stand corrected. You know more than I do and I would not have been so adventurous. What the hell, it worked for you. Maybe I will try it,[not]. but if it is a good thing I might do it on a cheap rifle. I won't do it on my better rifles. regards, FM

Glad it worked. It always feels good when a project works out. Any pics of the crown available?

Re: cutting a barrel?

i dont know how to upload pics :{ says they r to large
if someone will tell me i will post pics. its ugly now because its covered in bondo lol. should look nice when its done

Re: cutting a barrel?

liking it, i thought i "frankensteined" stuff but that may be the winner.

i'd definately put some kind of crown on that barrel, but the cut looks good.

i like the rod for the rear stock, is it embedded into the rear, or is there some colapsability to it (like some kind of attached tube) running down the side for it to go into?

now you know how to post pictures, please show the progress as that is an interesting "build".

has that bolt action pistol look savage had a few years back.

I think it is the perfect candidate for the "brass screw recrown job."
