Re: Cyber Snooper Busted!!

all you have posted is the ISP's buisiness name, you need to contact James Cable LLC and inform them someone from the listed IP address, at the date and time the incident happened is violating the ISP's AUP (acceptable Use Policy). We all sign one, its just in that long page of legal shit and you click the agree box, but no one really reads it. Anyway, everyone should take precautions, if you post a public email address, dont post the address that is also the one you use for password reset. We all are human which means our ability to be creative and remember lots of different passwords is limited, our password re-use is one of the biggest security risks around. If one password is compromised, then it will lead to many of your other accounts being compromised. one of the other things I have noticed about this site. when you log in to your SH account, the sight doesnt yet support SSL or TLS sessions. if you are signing in from home, not a big deal. If you are out in public, say a coffee shop, then when you sign in anyone else on that coffee shops local network could possible see your log in credentials being passed in clear text due to the fact the site is not using SSL / TLS sign on. It is easy to see when you are siging in securily. In the address bar you will see https://snipershide.com/login Vs. http://snipershide.com/login
the https is the key to keeping your sign on credentials secure during the authentication process.

Actually it's 127.0.0.1

Re: Cyber Snooper Busted!!

The ISP is not likely to divulge the account associated with the IP without a court order to do so.
They may send the person a warning notice. They probably won't even cancel their service.

I doubt they'll bother sharing the outcome with you either.

We'll see what they have in mind, then share the "love" accordingly. </div></div>

Or some guy who also likes to use the alias "SAWMAN" on forums forgot that he'd had to pick something different because you'd already taken it. Having someone click the "forgot password" link on your username isn't exactly a crime.

Re: Cyber Snooper Busted!!

A little off topic, but I wanted to throw this out. I was reading a thread last night and the guy had sold some stuff to fellow SH members. He had posted their tracking numbers up to show that he had sent the items. I was curious so I plugged the tracking numbers in and got some pretty interesting info back from FedEx. I didn’t get a full address but I got a city, State, first initial and last name of the person that the item was shipped to. I’m mentioning this in an effort to show that your online activities should all be conducted in manner that is security minded. Information is the key to a “good hack” social engineering is one of the biggest attack vectors for initial compromises. Anything you post is in the public domain, services such as the way back machine, Google archive and others have no problem spidering forums and saving all of this for the rest of time.

In regards to a cyber snooper or attacker, it is virtually impossible to prevent the attack, but with the proper defenses, you can mitigate the risk of being online. Like any other criminal, cyber criminals look for the low hanging fruit, the path of least resistance, they will move on fairly quickly if the defense is modest. If you choose to use the interwebs then you are pretty much fair game to an attack, a little understanding and seeking out information on how to be safe online is your responsibility.

I'm not interested in prosecuting them for a "crime." I'm just saying they'll be watched. If they're benign, no problem. But if they demonstrate that they're up to no good, they'll get what they deserve. Simple. </div></div>

If by "they'll be watched", you mean that their ISP may or may not ever receive another complaint about them, then yes, they're being watched.

If by "they'll get what they deserve", you mean that should another infraction or two occur that they will possibly have to switch to another ISP, or another username and credit card, then yes, a heaping helping of justice may be served.

Re: Cyber Snooper Busted!!

Sawman,

I am sure you are well connected and all the other things you elude to. However, it's the Internet. You posted on "snipers" hide but did so in the comedy club section. Did you not expect something to be added that's light hearted? Back to the persona that you put out there. I would guess that Delta, Seals, etc don't go around making threats on the Internet. The poster did not insult you, he may be the IT guy for some ISP and try to provide realistic insight. Your insinuating that your going to kill the guy or hurt him. Who is acting childish? They will be watched? Really ? Then you will swoop in like natures fury and destroy USB ports? Come on dude, your right it is a forum, guess its time to get back to taking over countries and killing everything in sight. OUT.

Re: Cyber Snooper Busted!!

Sawman, I would never be so stupid as to try to school you on your area of expertise, Im not even close.

I do however work in I.T., and there are a myriad of problems with actually prosecuting this type of thing, at any level, whether that be with the ISP, the law, or civil.

To start with, if the person doing this has a wireless router, they need simply point to that and pleed ignorance. Also, there are several easily accessed ways to make it appear as though your ip is what it isnt.

For example, I just posted this from russia, but I live in TN, or atleast thats what the SH servers see...

Not trying to piss on your parade, or try to make myself look smart here, merely passing along what I have to teach, as I damn sure dont have anything to teach that falls into this sites normal fare.

But thanks for your insulting brand of off color humor anyway.

Your kind of mindless juvenile vandalism is why I remind myself to stay off the internet and off of these forums. Too many children with Mommy's keyboard, just trolling for adults to flame.

It's a good reminder that there is legitimate work I should be doing instead of posting in a forum. I thought because this was a "Sniper" forum that at least the men would have been seasoned military professionals here. I know many are, but obviously not all. Thanks for the reminder</span>. </div></div>
