I have been spending a lot of time at RFC lately and just posted this but thought I'd post it here in the rimfire section too. I don't see me changing much else on this little 22 LR. The yo dave trigger mod is AMAZING!
I purchased the 452 Varmint new from my local guy in April 2007 and it has been in the safe until recently. It still is unfired other than the factory firing. I have been reading and assembling equipment to get her ready.
The scope is a Nikon Prostaff rimfire 3-9X40 EFR (could not resist the $50 rebate). The scope base is a DIP 25 moa and the rings are Warne Maxima low. I thought I was going to need mediums but I used the set I had on my wife's TD 10/22. I mounted the the Nikon in a set of lows that I already had and there is just enough clearance to run the bolt. The height is good for a clear scope picture and the eye relief is good. I am very impressed with the Warne rings and found them for $27 at eabco.com. The DIP instructions say to torque to 6-8 inch pounds and 10 is as low as I could measure. I followed some instructions I found on the net and installed them by feel. I ran the screws in until they contacted the receiver. Then, I turned all screws about 1/8 turn for approximately 6 inch pounds. All six got blue loctite.
The factory trigger averaged 4 pounds 10 ounces over 5 pulls. I stumbled my way through a yo dave trigger kit install using the black (2nd largest) shim and the 2nd strongest spring. It now averages 1 pound 10 ounces and passes the bump test. The difference is amazing. It may be a little light for my tastes but I will shoot it before I judge. I understand I can raise the weight by running the nut up a little.
I put it all back together torquing the front and back screws to 15 inch pounds based on a thread I read on RFC.
I'm going to go buy a .17 caliber rod and I have a bore guide on order. The next step is to degoo the rifle. I am planning to run mineral spirits through the bore first because the brown goo sounds very much like a relative of cosmoline. My experience with cosmoline is that mineral spirits works great on it.
After that, to the range we go.
I know, I know.... here are some hasty photos.
