Kinda of new here, so be gentle. I've decided to get at 17 HMR to have some target / varmint fun with.

I've narrowed my choices down to CZ - either a 453 or 455 varmint. I really like the older 453 wood I've seen and the availability of a fluted barrel - just for the looks on the fluted. I've never experienced the set trigger; does anyone have any experience with one or the other to share? The 453's are still available if I look hard, but not too many deals to be had.

Thanks for all input in advance.

Dan

The "set triggers" are nice. Normally, the standard trigger pull is around 4.5 pounds, but once you push the trigger forward the let off is around two pounds. I think you will be good to go with either gun myself.

Skip the CZ's and go straight for a Sako Quad:

the set triggers are awesome, for some reason they didn't put one on the 455. the guy that decided that should get fired.

the nice thing about the set trigger is you have a target and hunting poundage trigger all in one, just by moving forward or just squeezing straight back. very similiar to the trigger setup on a flintlock, but with one trigger not two.

i don't know if the set trigger will mount up to a 455, but that would be a good addition.

remember that eventually the 452 and 453 is going to be phased out and the 455 is the "CZ of the future - today", which is the only reason why i went with the 455 varmint rather than the 453. i imagine that the aftermarket vendors will start (and have) start concentrating on this new generation of rifle. the removable barrel option will give lots of possiblilities not only as you the shooter, but barrel manufacturers to produce match barrels, fluted barrels, carbon fiber barrels, threaded barrels, etc.

not only barrels and triggers, but i would have to guess that stock manufacturers are going to put out more options for the 455 and follow in Boyd's and Mcmillian's footsteps.

sort of like the pre E and post E receivers on the savage mkii's. the pre E's are all but pushed aside concentrating on the newer style receiver.

there's always the rifle basix, timney, yodave, DIP is developing a sear, and other triggers that can be dropped in, but that set trigger was (is) a sweet setup that they should have carried over.

TOP PREDATOR,
Excellent response, very informative and just the kind of information I was looking for to help me make a decision. It looks like the 455 is a bit cheaper - and more readily available of course that the 453.

I could see getting the 455 and investing in the trigger; the flexibility of changing barrels and maybe caliber is intriguing too.

Well Predator,

You put up a convincing argument; so I just ordered the 455 Varmint 17 HMR. Like an idiot I forgot to order ammo, I've not paid attention to the local shops. Do most stock this caliber? I'm think of the Vortex Diamondback in 4-12x40 AO with Dead-Hold BDC Reticle if I can find one for this rifle, I've already ordered the mount; a BKL-261 4" Long Rimfire Unitized Dovetail Mount so I'm restricted to a 1" scope.

Cheers!
