Looking at putting together a Precision .22 LR together. Are the Lija .22LR tubes the way to go to put in a standard 455 action or is it better to go with Varmint Precision Trainer for value.
The build list I had in mine.
1. Base 455 (for action)
2. XLR Evolution Chassis.
3. Lija 21" barrel (have my smith thread it)
4. Trigger (Open to suggestions)

Is there be better option for the build? I am sold in the 455 action (I think) and the XLR Chassis. other wise what is out there?

My shooting buddy bought a PT and then reworked it. Basically all he wound up getting with the 455 VPT was an action and Manners stock. He has replaced the trigger with a TImney and the barrel with a Lilja. The first range trip had him smiling tho. Little groups at 100 yards.
Since your sold on the XLR then just buy the least expensive 455 you can find and build it up with performance parts. I just did a nice 455 build using the new boyd's AT-One stock and a F.J. Fedderson barrel. Also installed a Glades Armory bolt knob and a mr. Fly trigger. I've tried to get it to the range for a quick session but all we've had is rain or another chore to be done.

I'm still waiting for your range report!

If your stuck on the XLR I would get the cheapest 455 you can.

If you want a Manners get the VPT.

If you want a similar shape as the Manners get the Tacticool model with the Boyd's stock.

If it was me I would get the Tacticool, shoot it and see if your really needing a Lilja barrel. They are very expensive for what they are.

Or get the VPT a new trigger and shoot it until your really board and then re barrel.

Any need for another rimfire caliber? If so, buy a 455 in that one and then use the Lila barrel in 22lr. I have a VPT for my son and it shoots fine with the stock barrel. There are some threads on rimfire central about the Lila barrel and how the guys taking it to the n-th degree set up the barrel with shims to get the exact chamber config they want. I don't know if that is warranted or not.

The trigger needs replacement for best results. I started with a Yo Dave trigger and it worked great, until the bolt started coming out during cycling. I think it is a combo of the 455 design and the trigger, but I put a Timney trigger in it and that cured it- though people have the same issue happen with the Timney installed.

If I had it to do over, I might just get a 455 in another rimfire caliber that I might want. Get the Timney trigger, the Lila barrel and then order a Manners stock exactly how I want it. Adjustable cheek comb and butt plate and maybe even folding. 16 inch Lilja since we aren't worried about sight radius or velocity.

I wish CZ would sell actions, or at least partner with someone here in the US so that you could order custom guns. They aren't that expensive, but I always feel bad throwing 2/3 of a gun into the closet.

I wonder if DJ gets just actions since he does full builds. I would love to have one of his builds but dang it's a lot for a .22.

I've offered to buy 50 at once and cz has no desire to sell just the actions. What I do is buy complete rifles and deal with parting out the rest myself. I charge $200-$250 for an action as part of a build. With the stainless actions freshly out, the take off barrels are commanding premiums so the actions can be offered cheaper.

As far far as barrels go, drop ins ain't gonna get you one hole accuracy. Problem is they are a sloppy fit and they use a Benz chamber which is far from a match chamber. When I do builds I custom fit blanks from shilen, benchmark, and lilja running a match chamber of my design and the barrel gets permanently attached. They can be done with a cone breech (cheaper but can't dry fire) or a v breech ( more money but you can dry fire). Doesn't cost much more than a lilja drop in and with all the supporting mods I do, rifles are gauranteed to shoot .2's or better at 50 yards for 5 shots. Depending how crazy you go with options, it can be done for less than say a kidd supergrade (me providing action and all) and is gauranteed to shoot half what they gaurantee.

For the guys wanting to do it themselves, the lilja shim barrels I designed will be your best bet. They should be doing a run of these again soon and will replace the standard shank length setup they where doing.

I also was considering to do a build myself, bought all the DIP parts first. After reading pretty much every thread in every forum, I decided to just pay a little more $$$ up front and get a full blown dj rifle. After seeing his workmanship and the level of precision, there is no way I could come close to what he does. Food for thought....

Do you have a website that I can look at? I'm very new to rimfires and figure I'll just do things right the first time with a CZ455.

Djdilliodon can build amazing rifles! Mine out shoots me almsost every time I take it out.

Good thread, I have been thinking about the same thing. I am leaning towards a build since I prefer a chassis over a stock and am really thinking about running a whiskey 3.

16.5”inch” barrel, usually rocking a 5””inch suppressor. I think it’s perfect length.

I'm completely uneducated on rimfire. I would like to be able to use this build in NRL style matches if possible, is there any particular barrel length you think I should be hitting? If it makes any difference my TBAC 22 Take-down should be out of ATF jail within the next year.

Gah I want a DJ rifle so bad! I need a little brother to my defiance 6.5 in a Manners.

I will have 3 extra pro varmint builds soon ready to go. Since I did a batch of them I saved money which means I can let them go cheaper :). One will be a 24” non threaded barrel and other 2 18” threaded.

DJ can you PM me cost if I ship my action to you for a 22" barrel threaded 1/2 x 28. What options do I have on trigger? Timney Rifle Basix? Something in the 1 lb to 1.5lb. Do you require it to go back to an FFL or if I send the action can you return it to me? I will be using the XLR Industries Evolution. What barrel contours do you offer?

I have the 455 with the Manners stock. Only things I added were a Timney trigger, Lilja barrel and Vortex 4-16 FFP.

With Lapua Center X I normally warm up with 5x5 groups at 100 and can average well under 1". Then we start putting 1-2 MOA targets out and do UKD drills which for a 22 can be quite tricky as even a 2-3mph at 200 yards+ will make you miss.

Have been curious what it will do if I have it bedded or anything else looked at by a gunsmith, but think its just splitting hairs at this point.

Lol look at the pull down menu on their site

Since I could be wrong, I just went and looked again. There's still not a KRG Whiskey-3 inlet for the CZ 455

Right from their webpage:
The W3C Gen 5 is available as of April 2017 in fixed and folding stock versions for the following rifles:
  • Tikka T3 (non-magnum length calibers).
  • Remington 700 short and long action.
  • Sako TRG-22 and TRG-42
  • Sako M995

If by "running a W3" you meant "I'm going to put a Whiskey-3 buttstock on a 180-Xray chassis" then yes you can do that.

Build has begun. Details are as follows.
Base CZ455
Timney Trigger
XLR Evolution chassis (still waiting for it)
Glades Armory Bolt handle.
Lilja 21 in Barrel (will be threaded)

Optics:
Vortex Gen II PST 5-25 MIL/MIL
Seekins Precision Rings
EGW 20MOA Base

The long wait:
TBAC 22 Take Down.

Don has just built a 455 full blown custom for me and based on the pics he has sent I cannot wait to get it back. Super accurate it looks like with R50 ammo. He is using his own custom.spec barrels.

Here she is :). 58* with winds at 19-20 mph and I could still shoot in the .2’s off a rest that a chassis like that should suck lol. I gotta try out the benchrest adaptor plate xlr has available.

Send your 455 to Don Smith (djdillion) here and have him build it. He put a special run lilja 3 groove barrel on mine and in the Evolution stock with all the upgrades to action, trigger etc. I just shot it today out to 300 and hammers.
