I got back into shooting and found that my CZ 455 has been discontinued for a number of years and thus my options for aftermarket stocks/chassis have also deteriorated. The synthetic stock would be difficult to pillar bed and the barrel is not free floating so something needs to be done.

The gun will eventually be my dedicated hunting rifle, but used mostly for PRS/NRL matches until I get a competition rig. The type of hunting I do is usually for squirrels and raccoons which involves a lot of walking.

I don't want to spend a lot on a 455 competition chassis knowing it will be incompatible with my next build (RimX or CZ 457). I like the look of a traditional stock, I just can't find anyone (KRG, GRS, Manners) who is still selling a 455 inlet unless I go with a cheaper Boyd's and those don't come pillar-bedded.

I'm leaning towards an MDT LSS. Not sure which buttstock. Thinking of going with a Luth-AR MBA-3 or the MDT Skeleton Carbine Lite. I'm waiting for MDT's Black Friday sale so I'm open to suggestions until then.

I have a MPA BA chassis for the 455. Only chassis I have so no experience with other brands, but no complaints either. MPA is proud of them, but it looks like a 457 also fits

Do you care how it balances? If no, there's the MDT XRS. Looks and feels cheap, though.
And if you want it to balance in an XRS (factory bull or Lilja .900), you're gonna need the MDT internal weight and prob. a set of externals depending on the weight of your scope.

I had a 455 in an MDT LSS-22 chassis with a Magpul PRS buttstock attached. It functioned fine. other than bolt pulling out if I put the wrong Yo-Dave shim/spring set in the trigger and made the pull too light. With the 457 being such a huge improvement over the 455, I'd have a hard time spending much money on a 455.

Even if you can grab a current-gen "blemished" LSS chassis on the BF sale, by the time you add a buttstock you've still spent more than the rifle's worth. Maybe an Oryx if you can get one on BF sale. I have my doubts as to whether you'd find a "blem" 455 inlet that gets the best discount, but pretty much everything in the inventory gets some discount.

If your 455 is to be a full-time hunting rifle and you're not open to selling/trading it, I'd look at bedding it in the factory stock or a Boyd's stock and put the savings into a 457 or Rim-X (or Vudoo).

My $0.02.

KRG made the X-Ray for the 455 for a while, and I believe they had a Bravo for a bit as well. You’d have to be willing to post a WTB and deal with the potential for scammers, wait for one to get posted in a classified ad, or set eBay searches and wait. Either way, you may be waiting a while, but they ARE out there.

Installing pillars in the factory synthetic stock would be tricky. It doesn't have as much material as a wood stock. This would be my first choice and I could likely do the work myself if I get access to a drill press.

I will wait to see what deals are on Black Friday. I'm hesitant to sell the 455 because I'm not sure I would come out ahead buying a 457 and putting that into a chassis/stock.

In my absence from this forum the rules have changed and I'm not eligible to post in the PX. Kind of crazy given that I've been a member since 2011.

You have to be a site supporter, which is $20/month or like $200/year. Kinda stinks compared to the old days, but Frank got tired of the crap (rightfully so) and the fee generally keeps the riff-raff out while also helping to keep the lights on.

I was thinking "glass bed," not "pillar bed."

If your 455 is destined to be a distance-carried hunting rifle - a purpose for which the 455 seems ideal - it seems to me the weight of an aluminum chassis is a detriment as well as the cost. Glass bedding could give you better stock rigidity without the weight and expense of the chassis.

My 455 shipped in a Boyd stock (the rifle was the "Tacticool" variant). I played with bolt tension on the Boyd stock before getting the LSS chassis... it didn't make a noticeable (to me) accuracy difference. Nor, really, did the LSS-22 chassis make much if any difference. The one thing that DID make a difference was putting a borrowed Harrell tuner on it.
--------

While your plan for using your 455 for short-term competition followed by long-term hunting, just keep in mind that a top-shelf rimfire competition rig is going to weigh at least 12 pounds and probably Much More. My Vudoo in MPA BA Comp chass with 22" MTU-contour Bartlein is around 16 pounds. My Rim-X in MDT ACC Premier with 22" Heavy Varmint-contour Shilen is 17+. I'd guesstimate the LSS-chassis'ed 455 with 16" CZ "heavy" barrel was around 8+ pounds. All weights include optic; the 455's scope was under two pounds and the others are nearer three.

Hope this gives you a few more points for consideration.

I would free float the barrel and see how it shoots, bed if needed. Start shooting matches and see what you want for your competition rig.

Any suggestions for how to free float the barrel? I'm considering a kit from Pete's Pillars and glass bedding the stock. It seems no one else has documented the task with the factory synthetic stock. Perhaps I'm the first person foolish enough to try.

You're prob. gonna have to reinforce the forend to keep it from flexing when you load up on a bipod. We used to bed in an aluminum rod in the forend cavity. Honestly, it's more work than that plastic stock deserves.
