CZ452 Varmint vs American

like the idea of a heavy barrel of the varmint, dislike the idea of 1 action screw.

I like the 16'' american comes already threaded, even if its a goofy pitch since I want to thread anyhow.

question, how accurate are the americans compared to the varmints?

I haven't seen any issues (accuracy or otherwise) with my Varmint using a single action screw. I thought about incorporating a second screw, but it is just a .22 LR after all.

Can anyone give me the barrel dimesions of a varmint and an american.

At the breech?
5 inches from breech?
16 inches?
20 inches?
and muzzle on an american?

on both the american and varmint!!!!

I had both at one stage and they were about the same accuracy wise. The varmint with the heavier barrel was a bit easier to shoot off hand. However in a moment of weakness I sold the varmint and kept the American

I have an American and I have been thinking about a varmint. I shoot off hand matchs. Do you really think the heaver weight would help me shoot better off hand?

Each to his own I guess. Best bet would be to try and handle a varmint and see how it balances for you before you shell out the cash. I just found the varmint wouldn't wave around as much as a the American. However at the end of the day there is no substitute for practice.

Here's the measurement taken of my .22LR CZ452 American

Breech (where barrel meets action)....0.971"
5" from breech.... sorry couldn't get a measurement without removing the stock or scope.
16" from breech....0.617"
20" from breech....0.593"

I have the American with a SWR spectre suppressor on it and LOVE it. I haven't shot the other rifle but mine puts 5 inside an inch at 100 consistently. Was shooting subsonics at a 300yd gong the other day with it. It was really dropping them in there.

I bought mine from a guy who had a thread converter on it and it works great. It converted it to 1/2-28.

I've got a 453 varmint I can measure for you. I'll try to get it up tonight.

CZ 453 varmint .17HMR Fluted barrel

Measurements taken at widest part of barrel, outside the flutes.

Breech: .990"
5" from breech: .918"
16" from breech: .745"
End of barrel: .690"

The breech and 5" measurements were difficult to get under the scope. I wouldn't expect that they are exact, but they are very close. If the actual measurement were different, I would think it would be a hair larger than what I have listed. Maybe a few thousandths at best.

My varmint shoots good. I did bed it and island bed the front barrel lug.

I have had both and sold the varmint and kept the American.
My American is a LH gun and shoots Wolf MT sub MOA @ 100yds.
I have shot American Eagle 40gr less than MOA @ 200yds.

my 452 varmint shoots pretty consistent mid .3s @ 50y ctc 5rd groups with lapua. at 100y it holds about 7/8 moa in the wind. my 10/22 shoots 1/4"-.30 consistently at 50y with a 21" clark barrel and the same ammo.

the 16" 452 american my wife had was lucky to shoot 1/2" groups at 50y and never touched MOA at 100 no matter what i put through it. she now has a 10/22 with a 20" kidd barrel that easily shoots with my 452 varmint.

pick the one you cz you like, because the accuracy will come down to the individual rifle.

I picked up my CZ 452 American Left Handed 22LR today. I am pumped!!!!!

Now I need to wait patiently for the Manners and the 22 Can. It will be an awesome set up!!!!

Hey guys, is there an easy way to make sure I get the right rings for this thing?? I want to figure out if my grooved rail on the gun is a 3/8 or 10mm. I think those numbers are right. Anyway how can I be sure? I need to buy rings and put a scope on this bad boy to start tack driving.

It is a left handed 452 American. Thanks for the advice

the numbers ar 3/8ths or 11mm. the first thing i do when looking to mount a scope on one of these is get a di products picitanny base. it just changes evereything to the more standard picitanny. you can get a canted base aswell.

there are also other companies with great reputations making the sme thing. i always buy a di products because they never gave me reason to go with a diffrent company

they sell them for 3/8 or 11mm. What part of the receiver do I measure to find out what I have. It is a brand new gun. Dont know if the age matters.

If you have calipers measure over the dovetail, a 3/8 will measure around .500 the 11mm will measure around .430.

Yes, if you need a 11mm I have a DIP mount brand new. I ordered the wrong one and found out the hard way. Waiting on my 3/8 rail now....

OK, yall are crazy!!!, well maybe its me too.


I measured the top part of the rail. I measure the portion of the rail that is the biggest. Not the bottom skinny part, but the actual top section. It measures .503 inches. That is 12.7 MM. I am confused now

I measured the bottom of the rail as well. The skinny part. Kind of where the ring or clamp actually clamps to. It measured .402 or close to that. That is 10.16MM.

3/8 (.375) is 9.52 MM.
.433 is 11mm.

My gun seems to be in the middle of everything. great!!!

That's because the 3/8" dovetail is measured at the bottom of the dovetail (skinny part) and 11 mm is measured at the top of the dovetail (the widest part).

The CZ 452 Americans were all 3/8" dovetail

The CZ 452 Varmints were 3/8" dovetail for 17s and 11mm dovetail for 22s

to the original poster.....are you positive that the varmint model is a single action screw and the americans are not? My 452 American in .17hm2 has a single action screw. My 453 Varmint has two action screws. My 452 American in .17hmr has 2 action screws. My understanding is that the magnum caliber 452 americans have 2 actions screws as do the varmint models. I would guess that a .22lr 452 American is going to have 1 actions screw. In my experience, there has been no definitive accuracy difference between the guns with 2 action screws and the guns with a single action screw and a barrel lug. For me, I'd buy the CZs in this order:
1. 452 American
2. 452 Full Stock
3. 452 Varmint

I can shoot more accurately if i do not use the single set trigger on my 453, so unless you are going to hunt and shoot benchrest with it, there is little need for the 453s.

the 453 varmint has 2 action screws. mine and my friends 452 varmints have 1 action screw and a barrel lug. the 452 american my wife had was 2 action screws. the varmints stock is much more stable on the bags.
