D.I.Y. stock inletting

What kind of tools and experience do you have?
Shouldn’t be too hard, I would think a drill press and chisel can get it done.. but if you mess up your kinda out of luck.. at best cosmetic, at worst the stock is ruined..

A while back I put a detachable Magpul bottom metal in a Hogue stock on a rem 700. Not sure if this is what you are refering to, but I was able to do it with the ol' dremel tool. Are you planning on trying something?

I'm not planning on it any time soon. My manners and greyboe both came inlet but I was just curious the difficulty in changing a floor plate style Remington stock to something like a m5 bottom metal

Ive only done the one with the magpul bottom metal, and it went pretty smooth. The action screw holes lined up the same on both, so all I had to do was shave material off the stock and check the fitment until everything fit right. There are a few youtube videos on it that would probably give you a good idea where to start also!

What material is the stock made out of?
Get some inletting black, or Prussian blue. Paint a thin layer onto the stock side of the bottom metal Use threaded rods or your action screws to line the bottom metal up. position it against the stock and give it a light tap with a soft mallet to transfer the black to the stock. Carve out the spots where the black sticks. Since this is your first time GO SLOW! Think about each cut and if it's a wood stock be particularly mindful of grain direction. If you're cutting against the grain with dull tools you're going to chip out chunks of wood and it's going to look like crap.
