Damage barrel with cleaning jag?

New rifle, doing a good scrubbing on it. Using a Possum Hollow Bore Guide. And i was having issues pushing the jag through. Figured it was just tight fitting patches. But now that i look at the jag, it looks like its all fucked to hell. It is made from a soft “alloy” and is supposed to be barrel safe. Do you think something like this could have caused damage to the steel barrel or the rifling?

I use a quality bore guide and Dewey rods. Using boretech jags like yours. My jags look similar wear and tear wise. I have noticed no apparent accuracy problems from barrel I could sum up to my cleaning regimen/equipment.

I would highly doubt you did any damage but I would be getting me a different jag.

Even if those marks are from the barrel, that would indicate that the jag is softer than the steel the barrel is made of. Softer metals "shouldn't" mar or scratch harder metals. But I'm not a metallurgist so take this for what you paid for it.

Just to be sure, you can send your rifle to me and I can run a few thousand rounds through it to see if accuracy starts falling off at any point in time. If accuracy does fall off I can send the rifle with the shot out barrel back to you along with a detailed report.


All kidding aside, that jag is a lot softer than your barrel steel, and for that matter a lot softer than the copper jacket of bullets.

I use proper sized Bore Tech jags and have not had a similar issue.

Yes sir, correct size jag boretech jag And a possum hollow bore guide. Dont know what the hell happened. I felt alot of resistance and figured it was just the patches where a little on the big side.

I use nylon jags on my smooth bores and love them as they hold the patch tight against the bore.

Didn’t know anybody made them in rifle calibers. May I ask who manf them?

On occasion a patch will bunch up. It can make it hard to push through. Doubt you damaged the barrel.
