He told me he had no box or anything for it, which is kind of ridiculous, because I consider Dan Wesson a higher end revolver, but that is neither here nor there. Is $600 still good with no box? He said 20-30 rounds through it and showed me a pic of the spent brass.

Yea, not great pics, but it looks pretty cherry. I think the longer ones are a little more collectible/desirable, but a shorter SS one might be less common actually...maybe worth more in the end if they made fewer of them.

I agree that it's stupid to throw the packaging away, but some people just don't give a shit. They say they're not going to ever sell, or it doesn't matter, and then they cut their own throats by throwing the packaging away. When there's a huge market for counterfeit Colt boxes you know you should keep that shit! On that pistol I think it would easily add $100 if he has all the shit with it.

I save all that on even cheap Ruger carry pistols. I remove the pistol, and leave trigger locks, stickers, manual, everything exactly like it came in the box. I put the gun in the safe, and the box and paperwork go in a big box in the basement for...someday?

I know that just the original hang tags on some of my Colts are worth $50 by themselves. It's worthless but highly collectible...

I am the EXACT way. I have every box, accessory and bag for all of my firearms. Part of me wonders if it is stolen or something. Maybe I am being paranoid, but he is almost "pushing" to get rid of it.

$ 675 is a good price if it has the barrel nut wrench and the feeler gauge.
This is my 8” .44 Mag. It came with a 4” barrel and shroud and an 8” power control barrel for it as well.

You can pick up a barrel wrench from ewk arms. He makes barrels here and there as well. Granted, they aint the best pictures, but from what i could see, that gun is cherry. If it is excellent condition, and you dont buy it, you WILL live to regret it. very clean stainless 44 dan wessons are hard to come by...REALLY hard to come by at that price.

so do they ALL have the barrel change capability?

Be careful of boxes and paperwork. There are a shiton of fakes out there.

If it has the gedunk with it the Mfg. supplied when it was originally bought I'll pay for it, but if it doesn't it's gone forever as far as I'm concerned, and I'm not going to try and substitute it to get more money from someone else. Even if the box and paperwork are not fake (meaning they came from the Mfg., but not with that pistol) I still think it's deceptive and bullshit. This is WHY collectors pieces LNIB go for more. The rest is shady shit as far as I'm concerned. I buy Colts, and people have tried to dupe me but I've never been duped because I am very skeptical and only buy online from reputable sellers who I know (some of the bigger collector/brokers). I also know what I'm looking at, and if you don't find someone who does to point out the tattletales.

I think this is what is making me more skeptical than anything, that or it may be stolen. I cant imagine owning a Dan Wesson and not having paperwork or the box.

I have no idea how you plan on doing this transaction. If it is face to face get a bill of sale and ask for the seller's drivers license. If you think it is stolen ask for the serial number and call your local PD and explain that you want to ensure a firearm you want to buy isn't stolen.

It would be a local sale, just don't know the guy personally.

I have done many face to face transactions. I tell the seller that I will be asking for a DL and filling out a bill of sale. I will give him a copy as well. If I thought it might be stolen, I would ask for the serial number and tell him you will be ensuring it is not stolen with the local PD. That may give you the answer right there. Of course make sure the serial number is the same one he gave you when you meet.

Never hurts to ask him to meet in the PD parking lot.....

I like this. I may do this. It makes it a more comfortable situation for me for sure.

Well IF it was stolen, i doubt he would have turned down 600. But with this stuff, i find a phone call or talking face to face answers a lot of questions. IF i have any doubt, i walk away. IF i even think there is a chance he is being shadey, walk.

I assumed it was from someone in a shop.

and if it is a dan wesson, it has an interchangable barrel. They MAY have made a fixed barrel model somewhere, but not a 744.

I have 3 Dan Wesson’s, none had paperwork or a box when I bought them. The 744 at least had a barrel wrench and a feeler gauge since it came with a couple of barrels.

Now the important question: Did you buy the pistol ?

At this point, I have not. I am still on the fence and I don't want to drag the guy around if I am not 100% on buying it. At this point, I don't even know if he still has it.

Better snag that gun up! Back in 86 I picked up a Dan Wesson large frame 44 mag at the Rhein Main Gun Club. I had the 4” and 6” barrels. That thing was accurate as hell. I got married and ended up selling it. Ive always regretted selling that gun. Dan Wesson’s are very accurate.

Back in ‘86, I bought a DW 357 that had half a box through it, no paperwork or box or anything, it was my first CF pistol and has a couple thousand rounds through it now. Still probably my favorite revolver. It is such a good shooter. I would snatch up a 744 for $675 in a heartbeat.
