Pretty slick. I'm guessing he cut the sight tower, bayonet lug and sling swivel from the standard A2 block? Would've liked to see a little footage of that process.

I've long been an advocate of having a feature on Dremels that they would automatically short out if they get within 6 inches of a firearm...
I understand budgets... but a barrel wrench/multi-tool for an Ar is about $25... and a full AR gunsmith kit is about $50.... He destroyed more than that in usable parts... which he could have taken off and saved... had he just removed the barrel!! Which is dead-nuts simple on an AR.
Well... all's well that ends well I guess.

Loading room is taking a couple of weeks off while I do some work on the rest of the barn underneath it. On Thursday, I put in a 29 foot W14 38 steel beam to remove two posts and open up a 30 x 30 space for playing with cars and bikes without... posts in the way. Took out a rear garage door yesterday and framed in the space with some windows as I put in a new engine rebuilding space so I can move my machine shop into the current engine shop. I need a place to put the LeBlonde lathe...
But it's coming together. So much easier than the pond I dug last summer....
Of course I'm looking at Orkan's room and saying to myself... I set my bar too low, didn't I?

edit: awhile ago a couple friends and I snagged some Railroad tracks for lifting this guys place up with jacks, worked fantastic. Before pulling them out we had 3 other people in line to borrow them for Barn, Shed, Home work they wanted done. Was a damn good investment that just keeps on giving. Wonder if you coulda done the same for cheaper?

Being cheap/broke is one thing. But years ago (pre-internet) gun magazines would regularly have stories about "enhancing" your gun (usually a 1911) with a Dremel. Not because you may need to make due with what you had -- but as a tool of choice.
nothing wrong with a dremel on guns.... this guy.... ok dremel to cut down the front site, cool.... 25 bucks for a wrench to take that ring off and you wouldn't have to cut anywhere near the receiver.... my dremel only comes out to polish parts or to cut parts when someone fucks something up. last time had to cut a part off a 10/22 somehow a bar in the receiver came dislodged and jammed in there. took a small peice of metal between the bar and the receiver and cut it and got the dremel the hell out of there, i hate using cutting wheels near firearms....
Dremel and some felt wheels are the shit for polishing stone marks off of feed ramps. Cut off wheels for parts that are easily removable not so much. This guy makes me look like a damn guru gunwizzard. Guys like this are why I am very thorough inspecting any used gun I might buy.
Maybe not the preferred way, but it worked and it didn't appear that he messed anything up that he was planning on saving. Most of the parts that were cut off would be scrapped. It's not worth the time to go to the post office to ship them for what you'd sell them for anyways.

To the OP and all the negative nancys, you sure did miss the point of the video. I have debated on whether or not to even comment. But I just wanted to let you know that I feel sorry for you that you don't have the imagination to figure out a way to do something in a non conventional way and still have everything work out. I am curious how many doors you left shut in life just because you didn't have "a special tool" or that "thing" that EVERYONE says you must have in order to do a task or whatever. Critical thinking skills, the ability to formulate a plan, and the fortitude to follow through are a combination of things lacking in society these days. But thank you for sharing my video, please click the ads! I have enjoyed the google adsense checks for the last five years!!

Thanks for the additional link. As a fellow redneck I totally got the thought process.
Dremels are great tools, I use them all the time. But they aren't really cheap, and they don't exactly give the cutting tool attachments away either. So you really do need to qualify your "on the cheap". If you wanted to go real cheap, couldn't you have done this with a file and some elbow grease?
Here's my favorite Dremel story... I was on the crew that ran the 4 channel mass spec on MIRAGE (air pollution research over Mexico in '06). We spent big bucks for wind tunnel testing to develop the snorkels that sampled the air during flight. It turned out to be one of those nice theories that don't work for shit. So the inner tube, which was made from PTFE had to be "modified". In this case, the modification was to cut an inch off of the theoretically perfect tube with the trusty dremel, then shape the cut edge by eye so all those airborne pollutants would behave and find their way into the mass spec. Then we'd go fly another trial, then come back and grind more teflon away. Eventually we got a decent signal, but Fred wanted me to keep grinding. Our final masterpiece was a little 1/2" stub of teflon pipe. I kept all the ground-off bits in a ziplock to award to Fred after the mission. The ziplock was stapled to a short piece of 2x4 that I'd written: "Aerodynamics Guru Award, presented by Dremel, Inc."
A minimal investment would have meant not killing parts in the process of modifying the rifle. One slip with that Dremel would have set him back much more than what he saved by not having "fancy" tools. Some of this shooting stuff is akin to being the poor kid standing outside the general store without shiny coins to go in and get a MoonPie and an RC Cola. It sucks, but there it is, and some folks get in over their heads and have to hock everything when something happens that ingenuity and determination just won't fix. For the price of a case of Budweiser 12 oz. cans, or even less, you can get a low profile gas block.
I enjoyed the video... it's the internet... lots of ways to accomplish a task....

A dremel is not a plasma cutter, one slip would not have DESTROYED the whole gun or anything of that nature. One slip and at most I would have had scratches in the anodized aluminum or scratches on the barrel nut. What value do you put in the parts that were cut off? They were trash the second I decided to put the Troy on there. The likely hood of someone ever buying or me using them is slim at best. Yes there are things that are outside the limits of shear determination and will, but this is not one of them.
To borrow your budweiser comment, If every time in life you buy that something rather than trying to make it, you'll never get to buy your case of Budweiser. In this case I got to buy my case of Budweiser and every month for the last 5 years I have gotten to enjoy about 100ish dollars a month from google adsense. So you do the math and tell me if my reluctance to just buy what I needed paid dividends in the end.
Reading into your comments it seems that when faced with a problem you tend to buy or pay someone to do for you. I am glad that you are a rich kid that can buy that moon pie and rc cola. But I promise you that when you learn how to make a moon pie or make an rc cola, it tastes WAY better.

You had to have someone else insert your barrel into the upper? Do you have someone else insert your dick in a vagina? As a man inserting a cylindrical object is kinda second nature and pretty much the easiest part of the build. Why did you need someone else to do that?
For the same reason I let them cook steaks for me at Ruth's Chris.from time to time. And anyway, he was cutting the barrel and headspacing it on my bolt. It's done .5 MOA groups, so I don't feel bad about the investment. As it was, he had to custom fit the extractor to the bolt for consistent function. Do that with a Dremel and video it for us.
I feel sorry for you son. You seriously had someone cut a barrel for your AR? AND he "CUSTOM FIT" your extractor? I hate to do this so please be seated when you read the following. You got robbed!! Did they also lubricate it with unicorn semen for the ultimate in corrosion resistance??
As for the .5 MOA groups it cannot be logged in the journals of the internet with out the appropriate grouping rules being followed. I'm not up to date on the latest version so you'll have to look them up on your own. But you won't have any problems doing that because your google foo is strong as you have demonstrated with you keyboard warmongering on here!

I'm sure that if you're too cheap to spend $120 on basic tools, you'd shit yourself at the thought of buying a lathe and appropriate reamers and gauges to do a non-standard caliber precision AR barrel, not to mention advancing your gunsmithing skills beyond advanced Dremeling. While your rifle is more than likely quite capable of enough accuracy for a hillbilly hay-ride drive-by, I was looking for a little more. Go ahead and grind your teeth. I'll dedicate my next restaurant meal to your obvious state of relative agony.

Love watching sight bases and delta rings die by dremel. Why waste a perfectly good gas block that's already drilled and pinned to the barrel when you're not going to see it under the handgaurd?

You speak of a lathe like you know something about it. I routinely run a lathe at work to make parts for heavy equipment or tools to work on our equipment.
