I've been reloading for years, and can't believe I haven't ran into this problem until now. Here's the deal. I bought a bunch of what a gentleman was calling 1x fired 6BR brass. Its all 6BR of the Lapua variety (hands down the best 6BR brass and not always the easiest to get).

Apparently the gentlemen I bought them from had a Savage rebarreled to 6BR, and well, best I can tell, gave up on it. He had the custom barrel, some left over bullets, dies and the brass all for sale. I have everything, but the deal on the brass was too good to pass on.

The package showed up and there were about 150 that were new in the boxes, and several hundred that appear to be fired once, probably 25 that have not been fired but are primed with some sort of nickel primer and another 25 that are primed with a brass primer.

Soooo..... to start from square one, I'm resizing everything but the new unfired stuff. That leaves me with about 50 pieces of primed brass that I need to decap.

I've searched this and the vast majority of folks say its ok to do and to just go slow and wear eyepro and earpro. Can someone please verify this before I end with some sort of bloody appendage?

Brand,

Yes, you can decap live primers, just go slow and wear eye protection.

If your worried about decapping live primers, just chamber and fire them. It is not that loud....unless your an apartment dweller that is......

Re: Decapping Primed Brass

I won't tell you who accidentally decapped about twenty primed pcs of brass when he was on a decapping spree. But, said person always puts on the safety glasses when he sits down at the bench.

I'm sure he wanted to start fresh with a known type of primer, but I smell what you're steppin' in

Re: Decapping Primed Brass

I decapped 70 rounds 45 Long Colt other day. I ease case up till primer contacts decap pin and proceed just like I was easing a new primer in, just ease it out. Wear safety glasses.
Primers need speed and energy to ignite. As sidewinder says don't get rammy.
