I'm trying to find some decent hearing protection that allows me to hear low level noises at the same time. The problem I'm having is I'm shooting a steel target at 600+ yards and with my old school ear muffs and I can't hear the ding when I hit the target. I'm finding myself not using ear protection just so I know if I hit the target or not. I've been looking into the pro ear series I think their newest version is EP7 for around $20. Any advice on what I should get? I like the ear buds as opposed to ear muffs. Thanks

Howard Leight's

Cheep, durable, well worth the 40-some odd dollars

Re: Decent Hearing Protection

You should find a hearing specialist that will do custom molded ear plugs with electronics in them. They will be expensive but, as someone who now has a constant ringing in the ears from loud noises, it will be well worth it.

+1 on what dogman says.
They can get a little uncomfy after extended wear time.

Re: Decent Hearing Protection

I picked up a set of the Leights, didn't really dig them. Neither did my wife. The fit just didn't feel right.

I use Peltor Sporttacs with gel ear seals. They work very well. No problem hearing impacts on long range steel. My hearing is actually better with them on. The drawback is that you will have to buy a fairly expensive cable if you want to pipe audio from comms or mp3 in.

If only some of us could!!! Moving out of state is not an option at this time.

OP, I use walker game ear electronic muffs. I can hear my hits at 800 on steel no problem.

Re: Decent Hearing Protection

Howard Leights are great fo the money. The SF plugs are ok but they dont stay on the supplied piece of plastic string very well.

Yep.
300 hour battery life, auto shut off after 4 hours, single on/off switch, and very easy to change batteries.
I had a set of the Peltor Tac-6 and they were none of the above.

Re: Decent Hearing Protection

I have Peltor ComTacs I wear occasionally. I also use the Surefire's, which I recently used for explosive breaching. They worked fine for that level of sound and I can pull the plug to carry a normal conversation.

Just an update, I went with the EP7's from surefire. MAN these things are comfortable! I can even shoot the 50 BMG with these and still hear my buddy talking to me. A few weeks ago I shoot the 1 mile and could clearly hear the ding from the metal target! These thing are really comfortable with the memory foam ear plugs. You can find them for about $18 shipped out, well worth it to have a pair in the drag bag!
